Another tube problem

Post by Steve Jelf » Tue Aug 20, 2019 11:42 pm

On the one hand, any flat is a bummer. On the other hand, I'd rather have it at home than out on the road. As soon as the car was moving, I noticed it pulling to the right. Here's why.

The stem had completely separated from the tube. I think it probably pulled loose after it developed a leak and the tube went flat.

This was a metal stem tube bought before I started installing my own stems. The modern stem is vulcanized into the rubber, but has a smaller base than the old stems. The modern bridge washer was flat, with no ring, but I don't think that was a factor here.

The pull-out left quite a crater.

I assume this was a Hartford tube, but it didn't have the name painted on it as they do now. I'll replace this with a Hartford I have on the shelf, using one of my own stems.
The inevitable often happens.

Steve, the worst part about that is the crater looks like it would be a dodgy proposal to fit a replacement original metal stem. There's not a lot of rubber left to clamp on.
Allan from down under.
