Repair for steering box “slot”

Visiting with a model T friend yesterday we got discussing a repair for “walleyed out” travel limiting steering box slots. How big a problem is this? We have come up with a solution that would probably make it better than new!

Les;
A 26 coupe I have been doing some work on has the same problem. I am going to come at it in maybe a different way. I welded a pad on the drivers side spindle arm to limit it's travel. Hard turn to the left and the pitman arm goes over center, to the right no problem. I still have to fit the arm to the spindle an see if it needs more or less pad then I have it now. I took a que from the Model A setup. The nut that holds the king pin lock does the same thing, limiting the spindle travel.

Les,

If required you can mount on a rotary table on the mill and relocate at a different area. Just an idea.

All the Best,

Hank

120 degrees out and relocate the pin to match it’s new home.

That’s a really good idea. Probably easier than mine

If you had this done in TN, do you think NASCAR boys at the shop might offset the new groove a little bit CCW to encourage only left turns? I know you're not near Tri-Cities, but bet you know a few fellers. :lol:

Probably not much of a risk for someone living in Calgary, though.

Scott, Forget the NASCAR boys, a true 1920's dirt track team all the way up to a 2019 outlaw sprint car team would have milled the steering slot to turn more to the right. Every dirt track racer knows you turn right to go left. Just kidding a little.
