Mag coil
Removed a nice looking working mag feild coil,it has a small place where the wrap is gone about 3\8 square no damage to the coil winding, just wondering if I could put some epoxy or something on it to repair?

Re: Mag coil
You know the time and effort to remove and replace the engine, transmission and mag coil. If patching a used coil makes sense to you, then why not?

Re: Mag coil
That’s your choice to replace it but if the coil hasn’t been damaged and the windings are still pretty good and not starting to deteriorate you can repair the small patch with epoxy or something similar.
Also you can carefully clean the coil with gas or degreaser being careful not to cause the coil wrapping to come off. Just be careful.
I did the same thing on a good mag ring and it lasted till I finally rebuilt the engine years later and installed a new mag ring.
The last step I did was to use some electrical winding spray and sprayed the whole coil with it. Using some masking tape over each of the coil faces.
If it’s a total rebuild I would get a new mag ring but a good working used mag ring can be repaired if all is pretty good.

Re: Mag coil
That coil ring may be an original that’s been painted over with insulation enamel?
Could be that spot is from deterioration over time.

Re: Mag coil
Randal,
Me to I touch I had a good usable coil ring Till I used it to charge the magnets on the flywheel, than I get this: a smoking coil ... or two.
It was good looking but... .
The experience learned me that when the engine is apart and you see some damage on the magneto coil ring, rebuild it or replace it by a rebuild one.
Do not patch a wooden leg.
My opinion.

PS. photo's are from two different coil rings. First three are a double coil and was a few years ago, as it was only two years old. I replaced one coil in the loop.
The single coil ring was a month ago, I rebuild it all. Both of the magnetos are working fine now with more than 30Vac output.

Re: Mag coil
Randal,
I reviewed your picture and remarked some darkness on the two near coils at the out come. For me there was some head there and the warp will be brittle and will come off sometime.
As it is apart, just rebuild it or replace it with a rebuild one.

Re: Mag coil
Since you posted your mag ring it does look like the insulation is hard and brittle which means age and heat has caught up with it.
Sort of like a radiator question. Should I try to repair an original that ‘looks’ good or buy a new one and be satisfied for sure.
Replacing a radiator is easy compared to replacing a mag ring that didn’t last.
It’s time for new one.
