Strange Noise on Ford Model T engine

Hi, it is a brand new rebuild engine. You will hear a strange noise on that short video. What do you think is causing this? The engine start right after the first crank and I have some free start sometines. I run the car only 2 miles. When the engine warm up I heard that strange noise. The fan work as well and the radiator is new. Neutral, forword, reverse and Brake work as well either. The carb restored by uncle Stan work really well too. But that strage noise worry me. I made a look inside of the transmission, magneto work really well and do not touch the flyweel at all. The running engine you hear is on Magneto.

Let me know your thoughts. Maybe I worry for nothing but it's look suspicious.

Mario
Does it make the noise if you are driving the car?
Either in low or high gear?

Engine running at normal idle, and scrape sound repeats every 2 seconds.

Maybe external, wonder if walking crank handle ratchet is hitting the pulley pin, or fan blade walking and hitting something and bouncing back?

Short video but sounds like valvetrain noise to me...

Yes when I driving the car. He made it in low. I never try in high speed if the noise continue. I always stop the car in the goal to cool down the engine temperature and do not break anything.

I think it is transmission related. Perhaps try putting the rear of the car up on GOOD solid jack stands. Then try starting it in high gear (while sitting in it). See if the noise is there when the transmission is essentially not doing anything

Mario: In the first video the bad sound reminds me of a sound I've herd from a 1930's to 1950's 6 cyl Plymouth, with a 3 speed, makes when the bronze transmission pilot bushing in the flywheel running on the transmission input shaft starts going bad. In the second video the sound is more like a Model A Ford transmission pilot bearing in the flywheel going bad. After checking all external possibles for the noise, fan, hand crank pulley etc , check the triple gears and bushings threw access door for signs of wear. You may have to drive the car more to see if you can pin point the problem. The short sound clips make this more like simi guess work.

I made a little run today with my car, arround 12 minutes drive and didn't heard the noise again. Actually she warming up fast because she had a brand new engine and run most of the time in low gear. But in high gear she run nicely either. Friday morning, She will pass the provincial inspection, hope everything will be allright. If she pass, I will be allowed to run her every where, It's like a reborn. Hope I will save another Ford Model T.

All the very best gentlemen.

Something loose inside the engine being picked up by the flywheel?

Have you checked for endplay in the crankshaft? When you are in either neutral, low or reverse, the spring at the rear of the transmission pushes forward on the flywheel. It could be that the magnet keeper is hitting the magneto coil. Could be at the bottom where you can't see with the hogs head off. It could be just worn enough to scrape sometimes. If you jack up the rear wheels and try running in high you might not hear it, then when you push the pedal down it comes back again you can be pretty sure something is scraping.

I will make a oil change this week end. I will remove the lower pan cover to see if I do not see any loose pieces inside. I will do also Norm suggestion in case... Again it is a brand new fresh rebuild engine, everything could happen. The guy who made it pass away unfortunately 3 mounths ago but he have a very solid reputation and he restored many engine here in East Canada without any issue... But no one is perfect.

I will keep you posted.

Mario, you might want to invest in a magnetic drain plug. Cheap and helps keep any stray steel or cast iron pieces from floating around. Dave

Sounds like bushing squeal to me. What weight oil are you using? If it's too light, that can happen. I had a similar problem, which ended up being the triple-gears. I switched to 15W-40, and it's been fine ever since. The rear cam bearing is bronze, not babbitt, so that could be your suspect.

A great day today. She pass the provincial inspection so she officially recognized like a regular car and I can drive her anywhere in Canada. After 8 years of restoration is the best rewarding I could have.

Mario, congratulations!

I think I'm just a bit excited by reading about YOUR excitement! Isn't it great to be a kid again? Or at least FEEL like a kid again?

Actually, thinking about it, I wouldn't want to relive those years for all the tea in China. HAHA! But what the heck, fun is still fun, no matter how old you are!
