Coil Top Hardware

Hello again everyone. Does anyone know where I can buy hardware for the top of the coils in bulk quantity and or the part numbers for these items. I have ordered all the nuts from McMaster Carr but I am looking for the spring for tensioning the top points and the small spacers that are installed under the standoffs for the top points in the event the wood has been depressed due to excessive tension. I might even need some of those standoff bushings. I know the vendors sell the kits but I have several...several coils to rebuild as a favor to one of my Model T mentors. I have sourced the large chunk of Type 3 Steep, and a plethora of points and caps. Thanks in advance!

How many is several? Why are you not just reusing the nuts bolts and springs off the coils? Unless you are going into production, buy the points in the 4 pack. I would think any cost savings in materials would come after buying a LARGE amount of stock, not what would be needed for several coils.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas! :shock:

are you absolutely sure that you bought the correct nuts from McMaster-Carr? Most of the studs on the top of the coil are an odd thread. I believe that the adjustment nut is the only nut that can be bought commercially/easily

Maybe some of the guys who rebuild lots of coils can direct you to a source (Ron Patterson Brent Mize, Erik Larson, Andy Loso, etc.).

Scott, I bought 10-32 nuts, and I have a spiral ream drill and tap 12-32 tool I made some small fixtures out of old sockets so I can hold the nut and tap it appropriately in my lathe. Seems time consuming but I enjoy the monotony after a day of clustered confusion and running around....also why I enjoy my T! I have an ECCT on semi permanent loan and I am picking it up very quickly.

Make a fixture to hold and drill #6 flat washers with a #3 drill bit.

Snyders has dropped their price on coil top nuts. The complete set of 6 is now $1.50. Hardly worth re-tapping.

I understand the value of doing work for the sake of the work itself, and the theraputic value it brings, so I do not condemn it (I do it all the time!). I would say, though that you might wish to take Adam's advice on Snyder's product. I am not in my shop right now to verify what I am about to say, but am fairly certain that a 10-32 nut modified to fit, will never have "the look" of the original nut. It will always look bulky. If that is not a concern, then it's not a concern. Myself, it would bother me... :). If I am wrong on the size of the resultant nut, then please accept my appology for jumping in again.

The front most nut is 10 - 32 the remaining nuts are 12 - 28. I made a set of nuts by using a #8 nut and drilling it out with a #14 drill bit then tapping it with a 12 - 28 tap

The two small nuts on the right, one is original and one is a # 8 nut drilled out with a #14 drill and re-tapped to 12-28. Once set up these nuts can be made very quickly

The coil vibrator and upper bridge nuts are 12-32. I buy thousands a a time with other rebuilders and vendors. They are custom made from the Ford print. The taps and dies are available from several vendors. I believe I purchased mine from KB tools. Dean made me a tool for shim washers and it works great. Thanks Dean!

Dean, that is an awesome drilling fixture you have made up there. I sent you an email but I am not sure if it went through with the new forum. Could you possibly tell me how you made that or what it is made of? My last restoration amongst my hit and miss engines was a South Bend 9 inch lathe and I am dying to find a project for it.

For coil point stand off shims, I use 5mm washers. They fit perfectly.

My error the top nuts are 12 - 32 not 12 - 28. I had a 12 - 28 and a 12 - 32 tap in the same container and I picked up the wrong tap. I have now put them in separate containers. I tell my grandson it is because I am 80.
