Good day. I have a 1922 engine with a cracked head. Head is cracked the length of the top, right down the water outlet.

I'm going to be searching for a replacement head at Hershey this week. I know the 1922 head is a 'high' head. Do I need to get a high head to replace, or will an early low head work as well? I'm just interested in getting a good head to make the engine a runner... I'm not concerned with getting the right head for the year necessarily unless a low head won't fit.

A low head will fit, but a high head will be better because of the added coolant volume. If you want to carry a head around hershey and to your car, you might as well get a high head. A low head will likely cost you more.

Thank you HumbleJ... just what I needed. My home base is in the chocolate field, so not worried about carrying!

You might want to look for a replacement oil pan too

Should be easy to find a high head at Hershey.
Lots more available than a low, and nearly a “dime a dozen”.
Check the plug hole threads as well as for cracks and the gasket surface and water ports.

If you go for a low head you will need shorter head bolts too. In either case I would get new head bolts if the old ones show any signs of stretching.
