I have a new set of springs and a Classtique seat upholstery kit for my 23 runabout. It’s been suggested that an inch of memory foam under the seat upholstery is a good idea. Anyone out there have a specific brand of memory foam material and a source for just enough to lay under the cushion upholstery? I don’t want to buy enough for a bed!

Mark, I was under the impression that Classtique were the best upholstery kits available. If the instructions do not suggest extra padding is required, you run the risk of your seats looking overstuffed, and perhaps making for a very tight fit in the car.

They added an inch or two of foam under my seat as well. You would never know it was there and it does make the seat a bit higher. I do not know if memory foam is the best type. I would suggest calling Classtique or going to a local upholstery shop and ask what they would do. I believe you were going to attach the cover to the seat frame, but if you add extra foam the string method might work better for you. I am sorry i do no have a picture of attaching the cover to the frame. Both methods should work.

Been doing custom/restoration upholstery for 43 years plus. The factory set up in a Model T was just standard and in todays times with larger framed people (Call yourself fat, I am not) the spring system is struggling and shifting to much for what it was intended to do (people on average weighed 140 pounds in those days). A light layer of batting, a structural material about 1/4" thick over the springs, then cover with about 1" of what you are calling memory foam (higher density foam) will give you excellent results with out an over stuffed appearance.

I know some of you are die hard purist but maybe it is time for a diet? LOL, I am.

I did ask Mike at Classtique about the additional foam layer and he suggested it shouldn’t be used. I didn’t feel I needed it, been driving regularly for three years with the original seats and they weren’t particularly uncomfortable, so any new upholstery is bound to be even better.

Mark, I just installed a Classtique upholstery kit in my 24 Touring without any added padding and everyone who sits in it cant believe how comfortable it is. Now if you are installing a complete upholstery kit you must install all new springs with it also.
