Interesting spark plug finds at Hershey

Hershey is always a treasure hunt for us spark plug collectors. I found a nice batch this year including some NOS plugs and insulators for the Ts.
Managed to find some NOS in the box Ford Script brass top Champion insulators as well as some of the early straight sided Chamption X insulators. They were quite reasonable too. I know a lot of you also collect plugs, even if it's on a small scale, but would like to see pics of what you managed to find in the market this year.

Some interesting stuff in there! Spark plugs have always been interesting, so many silly notions tried over the years, the artistic care in which they made them look so nice. Truly works of the era's art!

I won't ask how many you have now.

I have enough brass hats, so I passed on those, but I picked up nine straight-sided X cores (insulator with hardware), a few ribbed take-apart Xes, an Edison 14, another of the cream-colored Splitdorfs, a few short bases, a Monkey Ward's and a couple of Horseshoes. If I'm a plug collector, it's on a very small scale. My modest goal is to have full working sets of several brands. Currently I'm running a set of the cream Splitdorfs.

Steve you mentioned of having a few working sets of plugs. Just wondering if you have a set of T Blue Crowns. I have 3 I’ve found and eventually maybe I can find another. They were pretty good plugs and and were in business for years making all kinds. The blue rings on them look really cool if you like that sort of thing.

Nope, no Blue Crowns yet. I did finally get around to shooting some pictures of last week's plugs and parts from Hershey.

Here is a box of plug cores I found over in the Chocolate field. I didn't buy them all, just the good Champions. Price was good as you can see.

May be common as dirt but I've never seen a Wards Riverside plug.

Not found a Hershey but while we are on the subject. Has anyone run these" Gambles Deluxe" plugs? I think they are NOS as I see no wear on electrodes. I may give them a try. I was just looking for experienced opinions.

I've never had one of those double electrode plugs. I'd like to put one in the tester and see if it really has two sparks.

I already had a Ward's plug, but it's not Riverside.

"I've never had one of those double electrode plugs. I'd like to put one in the tester and see if it really has two sparks."

Short answer is no. Two ground electrodes (or more) with just one center electrode will always produce just a single spark, arching between it and closest ground electrode.

There were some plugs designed to produce two sparks but they had two terminals and two center electrodes. They were connected in series with a regular plug to produce the second spark. Not something you'd ever see in a Model T. Here is a link to discussion and info on these types of plugs that was on the AACA discussion forum a couple of years ago

That is interesting Will. I ran a set of Wards plugs that ran quite well. I took them out to put in my plug display after a few trouble free years. I suppose all plugs give different service at different times.
It's always nice to see the old plugs. The variety never ends.

Don’t know if they are real rare but I haven’t seen anybody post any Wizards before. These were in my Grandfathers plug box when I inherited his 24 Coupe in 1959. These are the best 4 and surprisingly they work fine. Probably from the 40’s or 50’s since they aren’t 2 piece.
I assume they were a Western Auto product.

Hi John. In 50 years I have picked up these 3 Wizards but I don't remember any others. There are some on Ebay and some look much later.

Thanks Rich for the post. I think Wizard was probably a cheaper plug than Champion. In other words sort of an off brand. The one piece plugs were cheaper than the take apart types I guess. There probably aren’t any 2 piece Wizards around.

Looking into my box of other-brand plugs, I find that there are several Wizard versions for Model T, including a couple of semi-take-apart plugs, which are similar to brass hat Champion X in that the core can't be taken apart, but it can be removed from the base.

The dual electrode plugs spark once, to the nearest contact. The advantage is that as the electrodes are eroded by the spark, they will switch between electrodes, thus making repeated re-gapping unnecessary. At least, that's what I was told. Others may have different theories.
