Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
As far as the wood clamps go I bought 4 new ones at my favorite store, but is there a chance on the sewing machine. What model is it, does it have a walking foot, and is it a 1/2 foot? Well It will be easier to bring the car over. Do I need a number or where am I on the list ? Mike

Have any up dated picture to share? I am in love with this car and I am in awe of your talents. I can't even color in a coloring book and stay in the lines and here you are sewing the interior. I would like to try sewing sometime but I'm not brave enough. The car is almost as shinny as my head!

Having no choice, I have to do the interior myself. Many hours of frustration, failure and elevated blood pressure that would blow a stainless steel brake line, I think I have it figgered out. I think I do...

Size matters ? '16 Centerdoor restore...
Since we are showing off our equipment, here’s mine. I was an upholsterer in a past life. Most people think size matters, and if so, I win. Don is proof, though, that it’s not the size of your equipment, it’s how you use it. This can all be done by hand sewing, if you have the time, so don’t let lack of equipment hold you back. Beautiful work Don, and you’ll really enjoy the “new” machine.

I'm learning that there is a learning curve Tim. But, it's coming along, not perfect but typical for me. You do have "big equipment". !

I was going to keep quiet until the end but I just cannot.
On May 12th Mr Kiefaber said "It looks like a piece of art,...". He's correct.
Beautiful automobile.
Hehehe, I don't think my great grandmother's Matron sewing machine would be up to that task.
Love these heavy machines shown!

Sorry for the double posting of the "Led Zep". Between the forum and facebook I tend to forget what went where.

WOW is right! I have been watching from the start and your work is amazing. I have a 22 center door that could use your talents if you get bored and have nothing to do in your spare time. If i ever get it done I hope it looks a quarter as good as yours. Your work is a true inspiration. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
Thank you Joe, and you too Mr. Pairofcleats .
Funny how you dread doing something because you can't fathom how to go about it. This cowl upholstery has bugged me for months. Then one day you decide its time to tackle it. Turned out the worse part was getting a 66 year old dilapidated over weight body contorted enough and still be able to breathe to operate a staple gun. Now, as soon as the muscle spasm's calm down I will finish the job.[image][/image]

Yup Les, I did a belly flop on it to get around the steering shaft. Worked good.
Ok, does anyone know anything about this firewall/dash brace? Did the 1915's have it? Was it on the '16's ? Thanks in advance...

Super cool! My late C-Door project sure doesn't have that brace.
They treated the sedans very nicely! No Tin Lizzie with upholstery up on the cowl section...
Hehehe, Pair of Cleats. Sorry Perry!
My gosh. That's beautiful work. I do like the grey.

Thanks again Mark, I so appreciate your comments. Bless you and yours my friend.
OMG !! This morning I received a "friends request" from Tony Baker of Ventura Ca. The famous Tony Baker of Hot Rod fame. I can't design an appropriate method of explanation as to the intense depth of humbleness, shock and surprise I am experiencing. I just can't.
Tony Baker is a historian, researcher, and archivist who has written two previous titles on car culture and is building a collection of historic transportation and industrial imagery focusing on California’s Central Coast. He lives in Ventura, California.
OH MY GOD !!!

WELL, Did you grant his request???
What an honor and justifiably deserved! Don, I have never seen a craftsman such as you have demonstrated. Craftsmen, of their own profession, like you and I, ALWAYS see the faults and defects in their own work. BUT, others see only the beauty of the end product/performance. All the comments given here, can not truly express the feelings of the people making the posts. I am sure, each and everyone of us would like to shake your hand, pat you on the back, buy you a drink or meal, and to be allowed to drool all over your car. Each of us has thanked you for all the photos and text you have published, except maybe for Mr. Pair of Cleats I am sure most of us would like to be able to express our gratitude in a better way.
Your work is OUTSTANDING as all of have noticed and commented. Now, your efforts are being recognized by more than just the people on this forum. CONGRATULATIONS, You deserve the recognition.
Cheers,
Terry

Thank you Don!
This has been the most interesting thread on the forum since last October.
In some ways I'm going to be sad to see it end.

WOW! all this beautiful work and NO chocolate stains on the material you get an atta boy!
I did notice that the pattern by the firewall is 1/1000 of an inch off center so now you need to rip the entire interior out and start all over!

WOW! I would have bet a jumbo bag of M&M"s that I would have been thrown under the bus by now for the comment that the interior was 1/1000 ths of an inch off center. Are you awake or still taking your afternoon nap?

I am sorry Dennis, I have been distracted by some pretty wild stuff on Facebook. It has everything to do with this car. I won't go any further with it until something is definite but stand back it could be a unexpected explosion. So, I read your thread and spent most of today trying to get it Sethproof. Epic failure...

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
Thanks Dennis, I really do appreciate that.
Ya know restoring these century old cars, I have always put door fitment at the top of the priorities. So, this morning I decided to install the door sill kick plates. Absolute freak'n frustrating brain frying incomprehensible almost impossible to believe that the thickness of these sill plates was enough to keep the doors from securely closing !!! I won this argument in the end but …. come on !

While those handles are nice, I can't believe you drilled holes into that beautifully done body to mount them.
Though not yet finished, that is already one VERY fine Center Door, and although it takes forever for the pics to load on dial-up, they are worth waiting for!
Now about that Parakeet. . . .

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
I've never spoken with Henry Ford or his contemporaries, so I can't be positive.
Period Ford catalog photos on pages 198 and 199 of Bruce's book show the sedan with assist handles, at least on the driver's side as shown in the illustrations.
The photo on page 202 (and a closeup on page 203) are labeled as contemporary photos of an "original" 1915 sedan owned by Charles White of La Puente, California. His car only has an assist handle on the driver's side.
The photo on page 207 of Bruce's book is labeled as a period picture of "two new Fords in front of a dealer's showroom in 1915". The two cars are a coupelet and a sedan. The dealer photo shows a handle on the passenger side. The closeup photo on the same page shows a corresponding handle on the driver's side.
All of the photos show that the handle has a black center grip section wrapped around metal (presumably brass) brackets that attach to the body. The handle has a rather "squared off" appearance compared to the graceful curve of some all-brass handles.
I hesitate scanning and posting the pictures in Bruce's book here due to copyright concerns.
Looking elsewhere on the web at the Cimorelli site, I noticed he had scans of a 1915 "Universal Car" brochure. It shows the sedan with the squared-off assist handle with black center matching the style shown in Bruce's book.
He also has scans of a 1915 "Enclosed Car" brochure that shows the sedan without "assist handles", so go figure! Even Ford's own period catalogs weren't consistent with each other! See the attached scans of the pages from the two brochures on the Cimorelli site.

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
Well, as with much of this thing, there are equal questions to equal answers. I have seen pictures of the '15's with the assist handle and the design is different on all of them. I've been looking for similar handles and have had no luck finding anything. I picked these handles up because they fit the pillars and also were about the right length in my mind. Mark I will keep looking and see if anything comes up with a confirmation they are authentic. Just another big fat QUESTION MARK with this thing.... The story continues. Thanks Mark, I appreciate it.

So, we all say to ourselves that this hobby is NOT an addiction. I won't mention any names but his initials are Mike Husted. He harmlessly went to pick up a pair of used Jorgensen wood clamps and came home with the same. Oh and TWO complete 1915 Model T Touring bodies, complete with windshields, hood formers, seat bases etc, etc... LOL !! Nope no addiction problems here !! LOL ..

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
What is that on the top left shelf? now we know. You have been hiding it from us all along. We wonder how you rewood a 4 door in a week, Amateur status bunk, you are a professional wood worker, it speaks with awards of excellence. I'm still thinking of my sewing machine and jorgenson clamps. I have a little touch up work on the 22 and 15 they will be ready for upholstery, in fact I could let you do the touch up, you could do it in 15 or 20 minutes.

What is that 2 wheeled thing under wraps that has been hidden from public view? It should always be completely covered and have a mask on at all times so as not to infect the project.

Following the progress is such a delight. If you have never installed upholstery over springs before this certainly shows what is involved.

Suffering through the sewing snaggle. Nobody had seat springs that fit this so i improvised. There was a 2" gap at each end of the bottom springs.

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
The people making seat springs do not care to correct the issue> I had the same issue with the coupelet . That is the way they have built them
for 40 years and you cannot reason with that mind set. It is like the hoods they have been making them wrong for 65 years and even when you
send them pictures of the correct parts, they do not care, same with the wood fire walls being 3/4" thick and then Henry down sized to 11/16 and today they send you one that will not fit 3/4" . It does not take any longer to make it right then to make it wrong. There is no pride in doing it right.

Well I worked on the carpet today. 91 degrees in the shade and i'm guess it was 191 degrees inside Henrys death trap. These pictures are of the fitting of it. I still have to sew the borders and put in some snaps. Fun stuff...if you like torture.

Duey, It may have been in your mind but it's also in my mind. I agree: TOTALLY the BEST THREAD EVER!
I am going to save the address in a dozen places and on every computer in my home. I sure as heck don't want to lose this thread!
Don,
I know you're 99.9% done and most likely 100% by the time you read this. CONGRATULATIONS on the most beautiful 100% restorations I have ever seen. Please make and post a video of you driving this beauty. You have set the bar very high for my feeble attempt at an almost identical project. Thank You for your inspiration, education, example, and motivation. This grasshopper hopes to make his master at least satisfied and hopefully proud of his apprentice.

Wonderful Don ! What a craftsman you are from wood to paint to interior. You do it all and very well. Thank you for taking us along and all the research and work is documented for the future generation to reference. Your pace is hard to believe or match. My old wood truck took 2 years and still not 100% finished. I hope to see yours in person and lay eyes on that beauty.

Thanks guys, but if I'm going to post the progress then I should post the regress. The top paint felt dry when in the barn but when it had the sun hitting it, it got sticky. I hoped it would dry but no luck. I did something wrong mixing the paint. So today I'm stripping it and its a freak'n mess !! Oh well just part of the fun.

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
I had the same problem on some car parts last winter, not once but twice, it was the catalyst, was out of date and it has to be used at a certain temp
range, also they do not tell you that catalyst has a short shelf life. You are lucky it was used on top of fiberglass, I had to media blast twice. Scratch it down, re prime sealer and repaint do not use the same paint, primer or catalyst. The paint Co. was sorry, they did not offer to pick up the tab. With
3 unopened gals they did not offer to take them back.

Well the '16 rear is sitting in a low spot on the lawn. The '22 is sitting on a big old tree stump so the rear of that one is sitting high. The Fordor is sitting on the level spot of the yard.

I was just looking at the space between the fender and the tire. For a sedan I thought it should have more space for hauling passengers. Might just be a optical illusion.;

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
Someone might think those yellow things that look like bud vases on the door pillars are actually, you guessed it twinkie holders. The one thing that
is missing is the coffee pot and frig. Thankyou for the shell. Mike

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
A bit off subject but I just wanted to share. My Dad was decorated WWII P-51 fighter pilot. He flew over 115 missions over Germany. Most of his missions were solo with precise targets such as freight trains and radar towers. This soon to be available book has a entire chapter dedicated to his accomplishments. Shot down twice he managed to find his way back and hop right back in the cockpit to get back in the fight. The book cover has a picture of him standing on the wing of one of his Mustangs. RIP Dad, rest in peace...

The little pocket idea is a nice addition to keep track of personal items in the car. It looks to be the perfect size to hold a pack of TWINKIES!

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
The pocket is a good idea, who would have thought of it, other than 2 pockets are better. You know what for. Not spare parts. That screw head in
the sill plate is about an 1/8th of a twinkie off, it is OK, if you add another pocket a little bigger. I'm only thinking that if you have company, but then
you have the twinkie holders on the C pillars in back. Nice touch of class.

Re: '16 Centerdoor restore...
Still doing cleanup on the car. Everything from upholstery to the wiring. I have drove it about 50 miles and what a hoot it is. The expression on peoples faces is priceless, from smiles to "what the #$@% is that !! ". I am also looking for a correct pair of assist handles, if anyone out there can help please do. Meanwhile Gregory Wells editor of Jag Journal and associate editor for Classic Car magazine has contacted me. He wants to write a feature article on this artifact. I don't know if anything will come of it but it is humbling to think there is that degree of interest. Henry would do the jig for that kind of recognition !!
