Ron Carey Dies in London to Brighton

Post by Harry Lillo » Sun Nov 03, 2019 4:53 pm

Ron Carey from Calgary was killed in an accident during the London to Brighton rally earlier today.
I believe he was driving an 03 Knox when hit by a truck.
Reports say he had gotten off the route and was hit on the motorway by a lorry.
His wife was airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries.

So very not good! Was it only last year or two years ago now that a London to Brighton car was hit and the driver killed? I know there was an extensive investigation to follow that incident, however I never read of a conclusion to that investigation.
Regardless, my heart and condolences go out to the family and friends involved in this incident.

An awful accident... :(

appears that perhaps a wrong turn put them on the M23 which was aparently not part of the official route

condolences to family and those that knew him, and prayers for his wife

It is two years since David Corry was killed on the historic run. David Corry was driving a 1902 Benz.
News reports of today's accident are still sketchy. And of course it will be some while before many details will be revealed. The driver of the Knox had left the planned tour route for some as yet unknown reason.
Regardless again, a very sad day for all involved.

Here is a small insight about Ron's collections.
He started collecting gas pumps and signs before anyone thought they were collectible.

Terrible news and a grim reminder of how careful we all must be when driving 100+ year- old machinery.
Heartfelt condolences to the family and prayers for Ron's wife.

I've known Ron for probably 20-25 years -- not nearly so well as the Calgary guys - but enough to consider him a friend. His was an interesting story. Orpaned at a young age, grew up to start roughnecking in the oil patch a little earlier than I did, the late 50's; then he went to work for Jones and Laughlin selling drilling bits. When they pulled out of Canada he started his own company, named it JL and went on to become very successful. He was not only an old car guy but liked history and historical things. He came to an auction years ago and bought a back bar for one of his displays, hunted Sheep all over the world, donated gas station memorabilia to the Calgary museum, trucks to the museum at Irricanna, etc. I spent part of a day with him once going through his truck restoration shop. He stopped here one time to look at my gas station stuff, had an old Mitchell truck loaded on a trailer headed to his shop to be restored.

It is a loss to the hobby, to Canada and to his friends.

Here is another side to Ron. As the article says, charity doesn't only mean giving money.
Ron gave freely of his time as well; in this case wildlife conservation.
