What have you done with your T in November ?
Snowing and raining here, but I did start it for a group of fellows from Germany visiting another friend.
Younger guys, 30-40?, they were mesmerized !
I highly doubt they have ever seen a T, wish I had taken a picture of their faces. I wish it wasn’t so crappy outside also, they would have been thrilled to get a ride.
I did get a pic of one guy at the gun range. They were really wanting to shoot a little while here for a week. 2 guys are German and 2 Russian, but spoke English, and German between each other. A couple were in the military, but they hadn’t shot a gun since. A hockey game tonight, Buckeyes tomorrow and the Browns Sunday....full schedule !!

Had my pan checked on Toon Boer's homemade jig, turned out my pan was just a tiny bit off but one of the arms is about a half inch out too much, will have to correct that at a later moment.
Toon is a really nice and humble man with a wealth of knowledge and decades of experience, and has a great collection of mechanical oddities, old tractors, stationary engines and farm equipment.
He even has a potatoe harvesting machine the size of a bus he built himself in the fifties early sixties, an incredible machine
Loved the visit Toon , and thank your lovely wife for the coffee and cookies !
(pictures are not my pan but from an earlier post by Toon of his jig)

Re: What have you done with your T in November ?
After close to three years of constant aggravation on my 12, got the motor back into the car only to find some more problems. I removed the Rockies from my 12 and installed them on my 21 and installed the sure stop disc system on my 12. Now that I put the motor into the 12 with the Warford I am stuck again. There is no way to bolt everything together because there is not enough room for the bolts. The Warford has a two inch space available for the bolts and with the surestop bracket of the master cylinder it would require a close to three inch bolt to secure everything together. I have no choice but to remove the rockies and the sure stop from the two cars and switch them back to where they were, including the brake pedals from the hogshead. I wanted to drive one of the cars in the Christmas parade but it looks like it is not going to happen. Most likely will end up messing up the paint on both wheels when changing out the drums or maybe end up buying new hub bolts resulting in additional time down. The drama of the affliction continues. Don’t you just love it!!!!!

Re: What have you done with your T in November ?
Went for a very short ride today, since the sun was out and this might be it before the salt flies...
Just 2 houses down I hear a pretty loud “click click click” with a rotational steadiness.
About positive it’s coming from the rear axle.
I guess this winter will be my “Ruckstell 101 class” !!
Fortunately I have a couple guys with way more knowledge than me about the Ruckstell close by.
I did notice a lot more play in the left axle, in & out than I thought was normal. And a bit of bronze sparklies in the fluid I sucked out. Possibly thrust washer ?

Re: What have you done with your T in November ?
I've never had a floor mat in the runabout, so last week I bought one and today I installed it. The mats are made a little oversize so they can be trimmed to fit various years from 1915 to 1924. This mat is impressively thick and heavy. If it's good rubber it should last a long time.
The materials needed for the job are cardboard and tape. A fry case will suit. It's free.
Make the main body of the pattern by tracing and cutting out the pedal and lever holes.
Align the pattern with the lever and pedals and tape it in place.
Lay on smaller pieces that fit the outer edges of the floor and tape them to the main body of the pattern.
Align the pattern with the mat's pedal and lever holes and trim off the pieces of mat that stick out.

Looks good! For anyone interested, Snyders sells untrimmed mats that have a lot of extra material around the edges for custom trimming. It's a necessity for 1925 open models, as the pre-cut mats don't have enough material to fit 1925s correctly.

Re: What have you done with your T in November ?
Took out about .0005 in shims from #3 rod bearing and took out a bit of slack in the drag link. Getting ready to drive to Campo Railroad museum for the 100 year anniversary of the San Diego Arizona Eastern Railroad. This was a railroad which went east from San Diego toward El Centro. Mostly for freight but did have some passenger service. It dips down into Baja California between San Diego and Campo. We used to be able to take the train from Campo to Tecate, but now it takes a passport to get back into the U.S.A. so we stop right at the border.
It should be good weather. Here Fall is just like summer except it gets dark earlier. It is 70 degrees out today. Usually we don't start getting much rain until after Thanksgiving with the most from January to March. We have tours all year around.

When Herbie and I came back from our Baja trip in 1970, an orange we had taken with us was confiscated at the border. The agent told us that when that orange crossed the border it lost its US citizenship.

Re: What have you done with your T in November ?
Moved the TT into "winter position" for some work on it later, when the weather
forces me indoors. It's been a rapid-fire succession of big projects since July, and
the old dog hardly got out at all this year. Roofed the east wing of the house and
sided/trimmed the north gable, then jumped on the shop to install windows and
make storms for the south gable and tower. Then I had my other truck lose the top
end for the 2nd time in 4 years, so right now I've got an engine rebuild on the schedule.
This winter the TT will get period brake and turn signal lights, rebuilt wheels all
around, new glass, and some new cab-to-frame blocks, to fine tune some alignment
issues.
All that work on the house and shop burned up a lot of materials, and while I have
a bunch still to put away and organize, I have all sorts of room to move now ! Always
a happy thing, right ?

I pulled the rear axle out of my 26 Roadster and tore it apart. It's going to need a little bit of work. This is my first rearend rebuild.

The old babbit thrust washers were intact. I think that some one must have replaced them at one time.

Re: What have you done with your T in November ?
I didn't do this with a T, but for a T. This morning I drove a couple of counties east to see the Big Boy, and on the way home I did some exploring and found this Model T road I've never driven before. Some of it is rocky enough to be low-pedal driving, and some is high gear road where you can do 20-30mph. In about thirty miles I met one truck hauling firewood and a guy on a motor bike. I also came across a couple of fords—the wet kind. I'll include this in a future Model T trip.
The inevitable often happens.

Re: What have you done with your T in November ?
I haven't had time to do much in the last month or so. Went to New Orleans for funeral then recovering from a bad cold. Hoping to get back to working on the T this week. I hope to finish the lower body frame and get it painted before the cold weather comes back. Might clean up in the shop, getting a bit crowded in there.
Just give me time to Rust and I'll be good as new. Wabi-Sabi

Re: What have you done with your T in November ?
Saturday, the Model T Ford Club of San Diego drove up to the Railroad museum in Campo Ca. There was a ceremony for the 100th anniversary of driving the gold spike which completed the railroad between San Diego and El Centro. This railroad was named, "San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railroad" It dipped down into Baja California, Mexico through Tijuana and crossed back to California between Tecate and Campo. This opened up the Imperial Valley to San Diego and the port of San Diego. It also made a very good route for rail transport between Tijuana and Tecate and greatly increased the economy of the northern Baja area. Today, the parts in the United States are in poor repair, but the line is still used for freight through northern Baja.
There were at least 500 people there and we had the Model T club and Model A club and Horseless Carriage clubs there with their cars on display between the entrance and the location of the ceremony so we had many admirers who looked and asked questions.

Re: What have you done with your T in November ?
Last week I started the rebuild of a 1912 engine.
On the front there was a 2CV Citroën flywheel and starter build up.
To do this they cut off the nose in the front of the oilpan and build the starter in a support under the frame.
The transmission end had also a strange build up.
The cilinder head gasket was mounted the wrong way and water leaking in the cylinders. The engine was blocked and didn't run.

Using the ball cap to maintain pressure on the clutch spring is the craziest thing I've ever seen
will it work? not for long!

Frank,
it didn't work at all.
Neither the starter or the transmission construction did work.
In August the phone rings: "Get your (my) name from a friend , can you please come and look to my T and try to make it run."
Just a good job for the cold winter days.
Engine is apart and clean.

Pat,
It will slow down better but really stop ... . It is still a Model T.
Drive carefully and think three mistakes further to give you the time for an emergency stop if needed.
Keep it safe.

Re: What have you done with your T in November ?
Today the temperature almost hit 50° here in Michigan's Thumb... with a forecast of temperatures in the thirties and snow by the weekend, I decided that one more trip in the Model T was in order. I dressed warmly and headed down the road for a delightful drive, receiving many thumb's up from the drivers I met. I'm not sure they liked the car or thought I was nuts driving an open car in the cold.
I drove by the harbor at Port Sanilac and parked by Lake Huron for a bit. The harbor was deserted and quiet - all the boats pulled and only one solitary fisherman sitting on the breakwall. The wind was calm and the big lake was like a mirror - almost like the world was holding it's breath before the coming onslaught of cold and snow.... As someone who has only had his Model T running since August, I fear it will be a long winter

My Ruckstell is all scattered on my garage floor !!
Special thanks to Mr Morsher and Mr Andulics for the manuals and another thanks to Tim for inspecting things and assuring me most of my parts looked useable !!
