That's a nice detail photo when zoomed on.

The owner indeed liked to drive and maintain his Ford :)

Engine mounted mag, as the coil box is gone, that alone would demand the oil can handy, to keep the innards running in that fast moving external mag.

And a T-handled dope cup on the steering bracket too for better means of greasing.

That round belt drive water pump for circulating the mixture of alcohol or what he used for winter time. Like that pump, you can read the casting info, "guaranteed for one year" on that "The Little Wonder Circulating Pump"!

Plus you can almost read the serial number on the block, it is casting date of 12-23-xx. Number 1 spark plug is different from the others, maybe selected to retard the 'fouling' that often occurs @ # 1 with use of a circulating pump.

The oil can has the attributes of the Noera type with large script, illustrated in the '15 and up parts books, but who knows, may have been used much earlier too.

I wouldn’t assume the oil can to be the one that came with the car since that car could be 10 years old in that photo...

I really enjoy this photo. As I recall it we noticed a Bosch magneto switch and front plate installed. You can barely see the aluminum casting where the timer should be. The crack in the radiator bottom and the grease cup are interesting.
Thanks for posting this.

This style bracket was made to fasten to the wood or metal hood shelf so it was just inside the hood for easy reach.

With a small footprint under the hood, on the early T dash, the locations are limited for oil can bracket. The short spout helps! Otherwise it would hit the upper hood panel :o

Style for the firewall.

Bracket only, the Ford owner already had the Ford oil can

Gonna stick my neck out here in order to have my head chopped off, but seems to me no Model T's came from the factory with an oil can already mounted on the firewall? I'm open to more accurate information of course. Positive I've read that somewhere.

In the case of the 12 it an accessory but it been there since at least 1960 so its been on the car for better than half its life .

"Where's my ax?" I agree Tim. I have never seen anything on a Ford bracket. I guess they just rattled around in the trunk, tool box or under the seat. It seems they would tip over and loose lots of oil. We see lots of accessory brackets for sale that might not have been advertised if Ford had provided one.
Colin, I do mean it when I say I love seeing these again. I hope posting supplemental posts does not ever discourage folks from sharing these magnificent photos.

I didn't know that Fords that early had Made In USA cast in the blocks most just have FORD only.

Imagine that! Sure does look like a large FORD logo Noera can to me that I was told was “not that early” in this thread.

As per oil cans I was told the early ones the top is a half turn and its locked on the later ones screw on 2 turns That can the top does not thread on so it should be early Cheers Colin

I’ve enjoyed reading the comments almost as much as taking in that fantastic picture! May I add two observations? The brass radiator mounting on the left frame rail. Doesn’t it appear to be a mite fancified ? And the part of the left front fender behind the headlamp brackets: hugely caustic acid burns?

I have a Canadian 16 engine and just FORD
DSC00412.JPG
is cast in the block It was learned form an earlier post that MADE IN USA and MADE IN CANADA were not in the casting until after 1917.

I agree the photo was taken years after the car was new. It is so interesting to study it. I believe it is a 1914, because I can see part of the inner skirt bead on the fender. I also agree that Ford never used a bracket for the oil can. I believe Ford put the oil can under the back seat in a touring, or under the front seat in a runabout. I don't know how many years Ford had a tool box under the front seat on runabouts, but my '13 has one. I also agree that Noera oil can to be later than 13-14, because the earlier Noera oil cans had a much smaller neck, and a double Ford script. I can't see a patent plate on the radiator either, but then the photo isn't that clear.

George, I think that's a repair patch at the base of the radiator mount. Others will know for sure. I took the "disturbance" over the fender as damage to the photo of the negative , but maybe not ? An acid or caustic spill ? Fun details to see in a good photo like this !!

I believe the radiator is probably off a '15/'16.
The brass "t" for the hose to the rear gas line would be visible on a gas crossover tube.
Hole in patch is also too small for a gas hose.
Passenger fender without bead, 1913 style?
Also, I believe I see 220,XXX for a serial number. Short boss. Anyone else?
Interesting photo!!

Interesting are the paint drips on the head and block.

I believe my T to have original paint and it has all sorts of drips in the old finish if you know where to look. However, seeing drips in engine paint is a first for me. (assuming this to be the original paint on the engine in this photo)
