Ok so in Colorado we are getting a bit of snow so I thought I would take the T out for a spin today. It did really well despite not having chains which I now want. Anybody have a set for the 30" x 3.5"? This was my first time in this kind of snow, fun for sure. This will go on the front page of calendar for sure. 13" and still snowing.

We expect some snow Saturday.

Some fellas use rope for traction

We are waiting for our snow. Ts are great in it. Driving them gets me through our Winters.
I will post photos when the snow comes.

Rich, while we’re waiting, please hold forth on using rope. I know you’ve done it, I’ve always wanted to !
From old pictures, I’d guess the old timers used 5/8 or heavier. The rope in the pic Perry posted (more alliteration ) looks too light to me to be much use.

‘Nother thought (? Question?) seems to me hemp or sisal would be far preferable to synthetic fiber rope for the same reason it’s best for pack hitches on horses or mules. It doesn’t stretch as much and will stay put.

I use 1/2 in rope for sand (5/8 is hard to get tight) and chains for snow, chain grip a lot better in the snow. Either way it is always fun.

If you decide to go with chains, double check the circumference of your tires first. If you are running 30 x 3.5 inch OVERSIZE tires, they are actually 31 x 4, so you would need chains for that size.

If our snow arrives tonight I will put my chains onto my ‘27 pickup. The snow will probably be gone by Thanksgiving.

I made my chains from discarded modern tire chains aboit 15 years ago... Work great. If the snow comes I will pst chain photos

Are the Universal brand 30 x 3 1/2 tires larger than the Wards or Firestone's?

Yes, the bigger the better (rope). Here is what I have used to get out of the yard to plowed or traveled roads. If you are on a budget you don't have to go all around the tire. This also keeps from dragging down the momentum of the RPM. The chains or rope will wear down if you get on pavement. I like sisal and believe that is what I bought. The chains tear up fenders when they come loose. The sisal can get wound tightly around the brake drum.

I used thread myself...why last year alone it took me 4,500 spools of thread to wrap my tires but the hard part was pushing the needle through the tire!

Ah yes ! Sounds from my youth. When streets and roads were all “snow floor” the traffic that was moving would sound with the sort of chirping whirr of tire chains, and the inevitable metallic slap of some element that had come loose banging on a fender. It seems no one puts them on any more. Snow removal has become so efficient most major streets and roads are soon cleared to pavement.You don’t have to travel very far on pavement to ruin a set of chains !

For the un-initiated, fit is important. Chains should “crawl” around the tire in motion. Too tight and they will ruin a tire by quickly wearing gouges in the tread. On hard-pack, the feel is a little “wallery” much above 20-25mph, but that’s fine. If you need chains you’re lucky to be going that fast anyhow.

Rope is good for yards and fields but a few minutes on pavement and you have alot of little pieces of rope. Shoot I never thought about thread! Much cheaper by the foot. How many feet are in 4500 spools?

We are expecting it on Thanksgiving over 3000' but we live at 2,350' so probably will only see it on the mountain tops. We have one right east of our house which is over 4,000' so it will be white. Here we just expect a lot of rain. We will be having family over so we don't plan to go driving in it.

Good thinking Perry ! But have you considered your tires are full of thread under that there rubber ? Save yourself a lot of trouble by simply running them tires you got that are wore down to the cord !

Right here, right now, and for about the past hour, in our part of the foothills, IT IS SNOWING! Well, nothing sticking on the ground yet.Maybe tonight.

While typing, the trees turned white, and snow is beginning to stick on the ground.

You’re wrong. The rope performed incredibly. We couldn’t get up a muddy steep hill after a night of rain on one of our T camp outs. The T’s went up the hill like tractors after putting those ropes on our tires. That size rope is easier to store under the seat when needed for an emergency.

In Dennis' pic the rope may pull against the valve stem. I always avoid threading a rope 'chain' thru that spoke opening, fwiw, jb

Glad to hear it worked well. It sure would be handier than heavier rope !

Mark it’s nice to see other people driving their T’s in the winter, I’ve had mine out quite a few times in the snow, I get a lot of smiles, though lots of people think I’m crazy
