I am in the throes of repairing a front mudguard (fender) for my '25 Coup project.
I selected a rough old guard from my pile of rusty tin to get some cuts to replace damaged sections.
On the underside of the one I selected was a tag that had been welded at the end of a roughly repaired rip , presumably to stop the progress of the rip.
After a bit of discussion in a local forum, it was determined that this is a Pennsylvania bicycle registration tag from 1943.
We found similar examples on Ebay.
The mystery is how did the tag get on to a mudguard that was one I would have collected from Outback Cattle Stations in Queensland Australia, when I worked out there in the 80's and 90's.
The only suggestion so far is that it may have come here with US servicemen during WW2, as there were many US Camps scattered around at that time.
I guess they could have had bicycles ...

Very interesting! It's actually a renewal tab for automobile license plates, not for bicycles. During WWII, it was an effort to use less metal.

Well that makes more sense....couldn't see the sense of bicycle registration, but stranger things have happened.
Are these things common in the US...I saw a couple on Ebay for various prices.. not that I intend to sell it. I'll just put it on the Coup as it will be a bit of a novelty in Australia.
