1925 roadster side curtain fasteners install location

Post by Afrazer » Fri Jan 17, 2020 1:20 pm

Getting ready to install some side curtain fasteners on a 1925 factory roadster pickup and trying to figure out what goes where. I know the Murphy fasteners come in various tallness for layers of top material and their is snaps fasteners but I don’t know what goes where. Do the Murphy fasteners go on the top bows and the snaps go on the body and windshield sanctions? Pictures, comments?

Larry Smith has a 1925 roadster pickup and made his own side curtains using Ford factory drawings, he is the expert on the correct fasteners and their locations:

Thank you Mark. I have seen those pictures before but upon zooming in they are to fuzzy for me to make out clearly what fasteners is what.

That's why you need to contact Larry directly. Be aware that some of the correct fasteners (Anzo) are very hard to find these days. Most folks use "lift the dot" fasteners instead.

In the meantime, here are some pictures of NOS 1925 roadster side curtains that were posted elsewhere on the forum a while back. There is a limit of 5 pics per post, so I may have to spread the pics over multiple posts. :)

Larry also posted pics of the original roll that the side curtains were wrapped in, the bag that the vendors sell is not correct. I ended up making my own roll using the dimensions that Larry provided. His thread is in the forum somewhere, if I find it I will edit this post and add a link. :)

Thank you for the pictures. Looks like they used very little snaps. I didn’t have a way to contact Larry and any pictures I seen online were of no help

Click on Larry's name in one of the linked threads and send him a PM. There may also be an option on the PM screen to send him an email directly.

How original do you want to be? I used all NOS common sense fasteners. Yes, they come in different heights, single and double, and sometimes, triple. It is correct the Anzo fasteners are difficult to find, but they do show up. Restoration Specialties in Pennsylvania has some, and I can help you determine where they go. I made all my curtains from Ford prints, and original samples. Be sure to make paper patterns before punching you curtains. That way you can get it right.

Yes very good point on using paper patterns. My main goal right now is to get the right fastener in the right spot if I have to drill holes. I don’t want a bunch of holes to fill up later. My 25 pickup is no where near the quality of smith’s but it was rough when I started I just would like it to be setup original as possible and later in my life I can redo everything better.

Something to watch for. Should you find NOS side curtains that say 1925 roadster, they are not 1925! They are for 1926-7. They were mislabeled at the factory.
Another thing. If your top sockets are original the rear sockets should already have the three Anzo buttons on each side. The front socket is drilled and tapped for two common sense fasteners, and the middle socket is tapped for one. As I recall, the front bow will need one common sense fastener placed in the flat front wood bow, and will need two #5 oval head wood screws for each side.

I've had the best luck finding new and used old stock fasteners of all kinds at Hershey. The modern ones just don't look right to me with the flat tops and the writing on them. The same goes for upholstery buttons. Ford never used covered buttons on any year Model T as far as I know.

My bows are not original they are repops. So I have no way to reference off of that. If there is any way I could get some pictures of the areas with what fasteners?

If the screw holes are the same for nos or original fasteners that would be fine. I could use modern for now and over time could replace and redo things
