WTB- RH Stop/Tail light 26 coupe

Post by Jerry Young » Wed Aug 19, 2020 9:39 am

I'm looking for a RH stop/tail light for a 26 coupe, restorable condition is OK. If you have the correct mount (R/H side) I would be interested in that as well. What have you?
Thanks
Jerry

Jerry, As you probably know, Ford never offered a RH tail light or Stoplight. I doubt that a RH fender bracket was ever available until recent, modern times. Both Snyder's and Lang's list the RH fender bracket in their catalogs, although their stock is always subject to change. The Hall made stoplights are not reproduced, only the cork gasket kits for them are. Sometimes you can find the lights in the most unusual places and for the most ridiculous prices. I recently bought one on Ebay for $25.00; the seller was a motorcycle guy who called it a "bobber light" (lucky for me). I had previously, bought one at a country antique shop for $25.00. I have bought others off of EBAY for $75.00 to $150.00, but the $150.00 ones were beautifully restored and ready to bolt on. I've seen them on EBAY for higher, but I'll pass on them. Maybe, you'll get lucky and find a deal on one, otherwise the prices that I found on EBAY are probably what you can expect to pay. Dodge and Huppmobile and possibly others, used a version of the Hall made stoplight. If the price is right, I buy the Dodge lights, mainly for the lens and other parts except the "can", but if you flatten the Dodge logo carefully, you can make a fine light with no script. I have even heard of guys using Dodge "cans" and transferring the Ford script from a damaged Ford can to a Dodge can.

Chris is correct. RHD cars came with the tail light on the right side. My 1927 US built LHD tudor now has its standard LHD light on the left, and a RHD unit on the right, both wired for brake and tail lights.

I have a RHD Tail light, but I'm sure it's prior to '26.

Thanks to all those who drive on the left hand side of the road for correcting me. It certainly makes sense that export right hand drive cars would use a right tail or stoplight, however being an American and never having driven in England, Australia, or New Zealand (although I've been to all of them), I wasn't thinking of export cars, just US cars.

Ross, that is not the light I need for a 26 coupe, if you have others interested, work with them as I can't use this particular assembly.
Thanks
Jerry

You say your looking for a RH stop/tail light for a '26 coupe and the correct mount for the R/H side. In searching the internet for '26 coupe taillights I'm seeing both a cup and drum style (no idea which is correct) but it would seam all that would be necessary is to take a left one and block out the opening that illuminates the license plate (piece of sheet metal and JBWeld to match t he outside surface)- possible? As far as the mount goes the license plate side has the tail light, the bracket for the license plate and a bracket to attach those to the fender. What is needed for the R/H side. pictures help

The "drum" lamp is the Ford accessory combination tail/stop - the "can" light came out in '24 or thereabouts.

Frank, I thought about doing just as you mentioned, modifying a LH lamp to work. The vendors sell a RH light bracket (Lang's 8785R) in addition to a backing plate for the lamp. These brackets appear to be for mounting the "drum" style light. Guess I'll have to bit the bullet and buy a new lamp in addition to the brackets, just thought someone may have a drum style lamp for sale. Steve, thanks for the explanation about the different styles.
Thanks all
Jerry

You're welcome !

The Ford accessory lamp is not being reproduced that I'm aware of BUT there is a repro early 1928 Model A drum lamp available from the vendors - it's not exactly like the T light but it's close.

as Rajo suggested - From a previous discussion "Here's some pics of what I have. The left and right light brackets came from Lang's, I believe. The drum lights and LED inserts come from Bratton's. The 28-29 Model A truck drum light is darn near identical to the 26-27 Ford and Duolight tails. It is in nickel, so I just masked off the rim and shot it with black paint. I do have tails and brake lights. I could hook up signals, but figured the stop lights on both sides would be enough to alert other drivers ( I hope ). The LED tails draw .2 amps w/90CP, stops draw .5 amps w/180CP. Very easy on my generator even" http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/50 ... 1428874448

I have a question about the Model A truck "drum" (tuna can) tail lights that Bratton's sells and the mounting for the right (passenger) side. I wish Bratton's had other views of these lights in addition to the front view.

Frank, in the picture you posted above, how did you remove the license plate bracket so the light bolts to the fender mounting bracket? Is it bolted to the light body or welded on?

What bulb/socket does it come with? Bayonet 1156 style or horizontal bulb?
Thanks
Dennis

The picture I posted was from the link above it - not something I have. Having said that all it looks like they did was take a license plate bracket and cut off the lower license plate portions
