Want To Buy: Amethyst H Lenses

Post by Burger in Spokane » Mon Sep 14, 2020 1:24 am

Looking to make an extra pair (and spares ?) for my truck in a color like shown.
Happy to pay cash. Have clear and lighter pinks to trade, if you are trying to
make matching pairs. Thanks.

The "H" lens became the standard around 1920 (?) and was used through the
end in 1927. The ones that will turn amethyst seem to show up on the 26-27
vehicles most often. Not sure if that is an accurate suggestion that a late
production run of lenses had manganese in the glass batch, or if it was simply
an intermittent thing. Most "H" lenses are dead clear. Some have enough
manganese in the glass to just turn a pink. Others can get quite dark purple.

That seems to fit the pattern I have seen. Would you like to sell your
amethyst one ? I can send a clear to give you a match. If this is of interest,
take a photo of the lens in question, as I am trying to make a match as
well. Thanks.

Hard to tell the color from that pic. Best to take it loose and lay it on white paper.

After you take the rim off, you just bend the tabs on a couple of the clips back and lens will come out. Or just flip it over and take from the back side.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

They are not riveted in the light ring pushes in and turns to release the lens and service the bulbs.

I have been doing that to one of mine for over a year trying to remove it. Even saturating with Kroil doesn't help. :-(

I've had good luck putting the light on a rubber mat on the floor and using my body weight to push in & twist.

I was shown a dandy period tool that is in the shape of an "H". The center bar
perfectly holds the legs at a spacing just smaller than the outside dimension of
the ring. Two of the same end of the legs have slots in them, that fit over the
rivets. The non-slotted ends are where the users puts some muscle to the whole
affair to remove stubborn rings. I can post a pic if anyone is interested.

I have found that to remove the headlight rim you must first loosen the rim from the headlight bucket. There is a spring, T-6586X, as shown in the diagram, that often gets stuck to the reflector through rust and/or dirt. So the first step is to break that bond loose by kneading -squeezing the rim against the headlight bucket (palm on the rim and fingers on the bucket). Its necessary to do this around the entire rim until you can fell the rim compress. If the headlight is mounted on the car the you need to rotate the rim counter clockwise while compressing it against the bucket. If the headlight is off the car its easier to have a person hold the headlight bucket while compressing and rotating. It is also possible to place it on a no-skid surface , rim down, and push down and rotate the bucket counter-clockwise. The u-shaped tool only works when the rim is able to be compressed all the way around.
