Post by Ed Fuller » Tue Oct 13, 2020 10:03 pm

Up for sale is a 1915-1922 style coil box. It has features that narrow it down to 1919-1922. The switch turns and feels fine. The wood needs to be replaced.

1917 to 1919 cars and for TT's, 1922. I am pretty sure by 1920 all cars would have been fitted with the instrument panel that would have held the switch and ampere meter or blank off as needed. The brace was added in 1917. The steel cover over the switch would not have come with the brass plate as it would have been stamped already, but it looks nice. The truck would have used this type coil box longer to 1922, 1923 was the first year for the Ford truck body. Round about 1923 the bent panel would have been added on TT's to hold the car type switch assembly on chassis sold without bodies. Trucks seem to the the stepchild when it comes to information. This would work great on a doodle bug, tractor or even a speedster.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

There were differences in the steel coil box across the years; one piece tops (early), no reinforcing strap from the wood to the box front, brass/steel latches etc. Here is some Vowell Art noting the difference in the switch units and one photo. I agree that the current repro plates are printed black over brass are not equivalent to the embossed brass ones.

The box for sale has descent value for the price. It would be a steal if the internal components are in usable condition - a photo for that would help sell it

The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.
