If you go down steep hills you should use your engine compression as much as possible to assist the Model T's brakes. That means as much spark retard as possible, no vacuum advance and no centrifugal advance only plain old manual!
Boy am I asking for responses by stirring up this hornet nest!

Not from me Layden, you are 100% correct. The only part I would add is if you have an auxiliary transmission then they work fine with auto advancement. I do have some if you are interested. Email Only.

The American Bosch 600 is a period correct (1920's) centrifugal advance distributor . It was able to be setup in several ways. In addition it had a lever arm for manual advance when starting. Here is documentation about its functionality. Note pages 4 & 5. Don't know about others of that period or any of the current ones suppliers sell. Also American Bosch is NOT a VW distributor or current BOSCH distributor

The fully automatic/centrifugal advance 600 type clip-on doesn't have an arm for the timing rod. The other Bosch's do.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Mark, Help me ID these two clip on American Bosch Distributors. Not sure what you mean by "Fully" . The attachment shows their respective governors. Among other things they are distinguishable by the method by which the head is secured to the shaft tunnel. I have never been able to properly ID the model or find any information about the red one - it has no arm for the timing rod. The silver one is what appears to be referenced on the Forum as an American Bosch 600 and has both a governor and lever arm.

Fully auto, the red one, the advance and retard was completely controlled by the action of the fly weights and spring. I ran one for a while but found the power curve was not to my liking. As far as I know it is still in the 600 family. On page 290 from The Ford Owner, under the photo right side bottom' The De Luxe Bosch compensating governor that makes the use of the spark lever unnecessary" may be talking about the one you show on the left. While not clear, bottom of page 291 and continued to next page, Automatic Spark Advance also points to this type. Reading I get the impression there are 4 classes of Bosch clip on's, De-Luxe, 600, 600A and 600B.

You need to read the attachment page 3 I added above. The references to 600A, 60B, 600C etc are how the Distributor is implemented. Also this period ad is a better description

Also since there is an expense for points and the possibility of condenser failure there is always an update
