I am not familiar with this puller and I didn't know one is required to remove the bendix on a model t starter. Could someone explain its use. Thanks. Art Mirtes

Art, Normally it should not be required. The bendix is supposed to slip on and off the starter shaft. The puller is needed when something isn’t quite right that causes the bendix to stick a bit. Usually this is due to burrs that have raised up around the keyway or the set screw or damage from broken parts.

I have one of those pullers. I’ve likely pulled well over 50 starters in the last 20 years and probably used the puller less than 10 times. Usually only on rusty bendixes or broken ones.

Adam, thanks for explaining the bendix puller. I have one like the one shown in the picture, but thought it was just a general use sort of thing.

Yes, Bob Is Correct ! However, the entire assembly (Bendix, spring, head) typically is referred to generically as “bendix”. That is exactly what I provide customers when I rebuild a bendix. Maybe I should have clarified that into a more elementary explanation?

Please note: When I was writing about “pulling the bendix”, I should have written it specifically to say “bendix head”.

Even if the puller is required, Once the bendix head is removed, the rest of the bendix generally can be pulled off by hand about 90% of the time, if it isn’t easily removed, then there is usually a visible burr that can be dressed and then the bendix can be removed. I don’t think I’ve ever needed any sort of puller to remove a bendix after the bendix head was removed.

The bendix head should be a slip fit on the starter shaft. I have verified that. I have copies of the Ford prints. :D
