SCAM ALERT!
Just received a text message from jmelanie850@gmail.com wanting to purchase items. The usual give me all your information and I'll send you a cashier's check and I'll arrange shipping. Be careful out there!

Re: SCAM ALERT!
I advertised some stuff for sale years ago and got the "I'll send you a cashier's check" response. It smelled fishy then and the day the cashier's check arrived, the emails started, urging me to hurry up and ship the goods. They were coming in about every hour and it started being funny. The other party threatened legal action - he was going to sue me.
By now I knew the check was no good and the next time I was in there I showed the check to a friend who was at that time a loan officer there. The second the check was in her hand, her eyes got big as wagon wheels and she said, "YOU DIDN'T SHIP ANYTHING DID YOU?!" I assured her no, I didn't trust it. "Good" she said. "This check is a fraud."
How did you tell that fast? I asked.
"I can't tell you." was all she would say. And she never did tell me.

Re: SCAM ALERT!
The minute I requested a name and address for shipping, and indicated the items would ship after payment had cleared, the conversation abruptly came to an end. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been contacted by this turd. Keep your eyes open folks!

I thought, we need to change the rule and allowing only MTFCA member could sales parts or car here to avoid these scams.

Re: SCAM ALERT!
Oh I see. But If he’s not a MTFCA member we have to be careful with him either no mater he’s buying or selling. PayPal is the safer way in both sides. I hate the fees of PayPal but less pain then loosing all money. It’s always disappointed seeing people trying to full other. Some folks don’t have any issues and sleeping well no matter they did during the day.

There is no crime until a check is cashed, found fraudulent & you had shipped the part. As they say, no harm no foul.Mark Chaffin wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 4:08 pmUnfortunately Dan, the Postal Inspector can care less and will not pursue it. Been there. Done that.

Re: SCAM ALERT!
It is sad we now live in the world of the scammer. Best defense is just what Mark did. Get their name out there so everyone knows they are up to no good. Then there is the other side of the spectrum, I have had people on this site ship me things and say " Make sure its what you want, then mail me a check"

Re: SCAM ALERT!
I ship stuff all the time before receiving payment. Never had a problem with T folks. Of course I do my homework to ensure they are a forum member when in doubt. This individual failed the background check!

Re: SCAM ALERT!
I think I was hit by the scammer as well. I sent my address so they could send me a money order and I asked their address so I could send them a carburetor. They answered for me to keep it until I received the payment. All their wording seemed odd so I asked if they had an address in the USA because of shipping. I got a response saying they were “from Indianan” and would take care of that when they ship some other goods. What other goods? Then they asked for my phone # so we could text about it because I would receive my money next week. I asked what year Model T they had and I never heard back.

Only show your phone number or email by a photo in your handwriting and their computer will not catch it when they scan sites for information.

Re: SCAM ALERT!
It absolutely was a typical scam. The followup is too have you ship more stuff for them. So the first payment may be good, so you start to trust them. Then they say they'll have some other stuff sent to you and if you'll reship it all they'll pay you for your trouble, my friend. Guess what, that check bounces and likely some sellers are on your back to get paid because "you" sent them a bad check.Corey Walker wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 8:09 pmI think I was hit by the scammer as well. Re: SCAM ALERT!
If I know who the seller is or know of them, then yes personal checks are fine. Other wise, yes on personal checks as long as the buyer understands it has to clear (which in most cases is within a day or two anymore) other wise, Pay-Pal or Postal Money order. If it the Pay-Pal buyer used a bank issued credit card as the funding source (Pay-Pal is not a what you have in your account only, you can have your checking or credit card attached to make payments), you can still have a charge back up to 180 day later. Like they say on eBay, if you can't afford to loose some times, you shouldn't be selling on line. I know I can't afford, but still do. To add, using Friends and Family does not protect the seller or buyer which is why I avoid it and would rather pay the fee.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Re: SCAM ALERT!
I very much dislike the steep rates that Paypal, and credit cards charge it is ridiculous. I don't buy much, but I generally prefer to send a check, and have the seller hold off on shipping until it clears.
Of course the last item I bought I sent a check on a Friday and received the package that Sunday, my check couldn't have even gotten there yet. Why the post office (or FedEx or UPS) has started delivering on Sundays I don't understand.
