Ron Patterson recently took pity on me for taking over here rebuilding starters and generators and he thankfully divulged some of his secrets to make sure what Im doing meets with his approval. ALL my methods used to rebuild starters and generators are in the same wheelhouse as what Ron used during his long and successful career. Doing these right is a righteous exercise in skill and patience.
So. I present to you, Professionally Rebuilt Ford Model T starters for sale. They fit any 1919-1927 starter cars including TT.
I get your core back in the wooden box I send you that fits perfectly in a USPS large flat rate box. no insurance required when you ship it back - it doesn't work anyway.
ONE YEAR, unconditional, no questions asked warranty ALSO included.
PROCESS USED ON ALL REBUILT STARTERS:
Completely Disassemble & clean
Replace Field coils with brand new field coils (NOT rewrapped)
Replace terminal post and silver solder it in
Replace terminal post insulator, washer and polish terminal post nuts and bolt or replace as needed.
Clean and completely rebuild brush holder plate, replacing broken/worn out insulators and assemble with SOLID copper rivets.
Tap all holes with thread-chasing tap.
Replace all screws and and all lock washers with new.
Install 4 new brushes in brush plate.
Pre-Test Armature on growler and check on lathe for straightness on both front and rear shafts, true shaft as needed.
Clean armature and take off ~10 thou on commutator surface or as needed for perfect brush contact on South Bend Lathe.
Undercut mica on commutator
Commutator final polished
Re-Test Armature on growler for shorts after cleanup.
Fit armature into field coils for final clearance as needed.
Remove babbit on rear armature bearing & Fit back shaft with new sealed ball bearing & spacer for proper clearance.
Replace Nose shaft bendix bushing with new IMPROVED bronze bushing with neoprene seal to keep oil out of starter
Replace Bendix babbit bearing with bronze insert. Mill and hone on lathe for correct fit, alignment and clearance for perfect bendix fit.
Check and adjust end play of assembled unit.
Brush Terminal screws replaced w/ brass screws for better conductivity.
Paint ALL surfaces inside and out with gloss black enamel
RUN-IN TESTING & ADJUSTMENT
Test fit reconditioned Bendix (not included, keep and reuse yours)
Run-in on bench to ensure all brush contacts are clean and true, bendix fits well and doesn't bind.
NOTE: the dust band that covers the brushes are included to the extent I have them - however, I've almost completely run out of good ones at this point.
Solidly packed in a custom WOOD box that you use to ship your core back to me!
If it fails, I replace it or refund your money, your choice, no questions asked. Some of these components are still 100+ years old!

I get a ton of queries about 12v conversions. Converting a 6v T starter to 12v is not an easy task. In fact, it's a royal PITA... there's just no room to work and everything has to be perfect or you get shorts and failures. I've done about 25 of these and the process and methods I've settled on seems to be about as rock solid as it gets. I use solid copper starter field winding to make the jumper connection and silver solder each connection point.
The brush wires also need to be modified and that is a major pain. In an effort to share what I've learned, here are some pics of the mods. Rebuilding a 6v starter performing all the steps I outline is a multi-week effort, and I do about 5-6 of them at a time. All told, it's about another 3-5 hours of work to do the 12 volt conversion mod correctly. If everything cooperates and the stars align its 3 hrs. Most of the time it's 4-5 hrs.
Here's the coil mod: And the brush wire mod: It Looks simple enough.... but getting it to fit and look this good.... well, your mileage will vary!
Update: I fully documented how to do the coil mod here so others can attempt it.

I can vouch for the 12 volts being a PIA! After getting the case back from someone else with rewired field windings (same conversion as Jeff's) and putting the starter back together, it was! Thank you, Jeff, for taking the rebuilding on.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!
