UPDATE all gone! Ruckstell fiber washers

Post by Dropacent » Sun Apr 25, 2021 2:27 pm

8-18 update. ALL GONE , thanks. Larry Smith is going to have these available soon.

What would Glover do? No more big projects around here so decided to have wifey convert my coveted really old red fiber material into washers. She just don’t know it yet! This stuff wears like the hobs of hell, but you need to decide. If you want a machined washer .115 thick, $25 ppd to you. TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT WHAT IM OFFERING. DIMENSIONS ARE SHOWN, THE I.D. IS 1.810, the OD is 3 7/8. No other holes. I’m not interested in getting in that debate. If you need to machine your P-159 bell a bit to clean it up, I can send you two that are .060 thick, for $35 ppd. Save some $$ on multiple purchases as $5 of that is postage. VERY LIMITED SUPPLY Tmorsher@icloud.com is the only way to take care of THANKS !

Tim, I would like one of the .115 washers. A couple of questions: what is the reference cited in your post? My bell is new, so is the Ford steel piece also .115 thick, making the fiber one a direct replacement? And what is a hob? Email coming. Cheers, Bill

Tim, I've emailed (direct reply) several times this morning. Everytime I have received an 'undeliverable/address not found auto reply'.

If you have a spare 3.5" crank pulley pin, add that to my order before you ship. My pin threw yesterday :(

There are three or four slots in the P-159 bell that allow for checking clearance with a pointed feeler gauge. I have installed a standard steel Ford washer in there, and then determined the additional clearance needed to give a proper fit. I then remove the steel washer, and install the fiber washer of the proper thickness to do the job, and allow for clearance. At the moment I'm thinking of having some made. Haven't made any plans yet.

Ryan, I’ll look , but don’t think so. I use dan MCeachern pulleys in all my rides. Set and forget! Bill, a hob, or hub is the thing in a fireplace where you hang the pots. So if something is hotter or harder than hubs ( or hobs) of hell, that means they are fire tested, and hard, hard, hard. As for the attribution, a good friend sent it to me. I’ll check with him. As for red fiber, It may be good to read up on vulcanized paper. This was invented in the 1880s ( I think) and was made and used for decades in industry, exactly for this use, and for a very good electrical insulator.
I have a NOS ruckstell under my car and it has original red fiber in it.

Please excuse a stupid question. 1.062 i.d.?? thats axle diameter. Shouldnt it be 1.812" i.d. : diameter of the axle gear?.

Thanks John, I corrected it. I’ve heard the saying, “there is no such thing as a stupid question” I happen to disagree with that, but that’s beside the point. Thanks for the correction. I’m leaving them a tad undersize on the ID for wear. They can be opened up a bit if needed by sanding them. In my opinion, they should revolve freely, but you what they say about opinions. That’s a saying I agree with !

I have no skin in the game as to whether or not the trust washer should be fiber or hardened steel, or whether or not it should have holes in it out not. I do want to share a patent drawing for a Glover Ruckstells' version of the two speed rear end. A quick history lesson, Glover did not invent the rear end, the forerunner was the “Perfecto Axle,” designed by Arthur Baker. The patent drawing (which often are often notoriously incorrect), interestingly shows the trust washer combined with a "bushing" for the axle gear. The combination is held in place (from rotating) by the small pins. So here is an example of a hardened steel trust washer/bushing with holes being used. Granted the patent drawing may not reflect how the axle eventually got built or improvements in its' life span. So draw your own conclusion. Enjoy

This is where the red fiber will be located, right up to bearing surface of axle gear, no gap. It’s also important to note, when ruckstells patent was drawn , the Ford differential housing still perhaps had the bronze bushing installed to ride on axle gear surface. This bronze bushing was eliminated at some point in time. A lot of original ruckstell housings have been rebuilt in this exact area over time, or should have been. Perhaps fixing it with a bronze T shaped bushing at that point would be a good repair.

Don't read into the fact that there is no "gap", again patent drawings aren't meant to "share" all the construction details, only enough to support the "claims". The patent that this drawing is from is a "cushioned change speed axle" meant to absorb some of the shock to the component parts during hard shifting. Filed in 1924 and issued in 1925.

The red fibre fits between the inner surface of the large bell housing and the outer surface of the differential carrier. The axle gear shoulder rides against the inner surface of the differential carrier and never comes in contact with the red fibre washer.
An interesting evolutionary tidbit. Re your comment about using a bronze T shaped bushing as a repair when there is too much slop in the hole in the bell housing, Tim, on Perfectos a flange or T bushing is pressed into the large bell housing and the flange part plays the same role as the fibre washer.😀

I’m not pushing one method of rebuild or recondition over another. I’m reading NOTHING at all in the patent drawings. I’m fully aware patent drawings can range from exact blueprints, to very vague concepts and anywhere in between. ...... I’m simply using the patent drawing you posted as a vehicle for pointing out where this simple red fiber washer , made of old school original vulcanized paper stock of the correct thickness as the original was, will be installed, compared to installing a steel FORD washer there, held in place with pins. I do believe, however, the red washer WILL touch the axle gear hub. In my opinion, it should be a loose fit, but also my opinion, it should be a much better fit than the FORD washer provides( which the ORIGINAL ruckstell manual mentions specifically NOT to use ! ) I did this because I’ve rec’d a number of private emails wondering where this washer is supposed to go . As Richard notes, the Perfecto used a similar bushing setup to ruckstells patent drawing. Richard has restored several Perfectos, and I believe wrote an article on same. This is where Original Smith can point out again, if he feels necessary, that he is drilling two holes for pins but not using the pins. Hurrah! Everybody can make up their own mind , and I’m also sure there are many ways to skin the cat. Maybe someone will check out using UHMWP for washers? That may be the better solution. I’m only responsible for what my hands touch.

I am drilling the two holes in the fiber washer, because that is how it was originally done! I only have one original used red fiber washer left. My advice to anyone considering using one of Tim's new washers is to check the clearance like I mentioned. .115" is .010" thicker than the original I have, which appears to have been .105" when new. There is a 1/16 ridge around the outside edge of the washer with no wear, and that is where I get the .105" from. Due to normal wear, .115" will probably be ok, but I would definitely check while assembling.

I really appreciate all the effort Tim has done for my original post. Thanks Tim! I pulled out a couple of spare P-159 bells, and they both have the dowel pins. I'll probably make some of these too, but haven't decided yet for sure. They will be the red fiber, and I'll probably drill the dowel pin holes too.

I’ve exhausted what old stock red fiber I had on these. I have checked and vulcanized paper in this color and thickness is available ,but overseas, and I’m not willing to do that exercise. Tells you something when a material like this is still being made,140 years after it was first made, as no modern substitute will sustain the wear they take.
Not sure of the demand, but may be worth the suppliers looking into it. PLEASE, no little holes in them, though.

Langs now has the new .125" washers that I had made. Please remember you may have to alter the thickness of the washers to fit your application.
These have the dowel pin holes just like the originals.
