4 left ....Last of the ruckstell washers

Post by Dropacent » Wed May 19, 2021 8:50 pm

I cut into the last bit of antique red fiber material for ruckstell washers. Some background. Years ago I was privileged to have E.M. Kristoffy rebuild a 2 cylinder FORD transmission. I will dare say if you own a preT auto, it likely had Mr. Kristoffy’s hands on it at one time or another. That is, if you have a nice transmission now. The dodge brothers transmissions Henry used didn’t hold up very well. The red fiber washers are usually the only thing still good in an original transmission. Mr. Kristoffy was the world renowned expert on rebuilding those and other early ford parts. During my visits to see him at his shop in the old Murray Body Co plant in Detroit, I saw about a 3’x5’ sheet of this coveted material there. He used it as the required washers in his transmission rebuilds. It took me a long time to talk him out of part of that sheet, but I finally did. Richard Gould from California located a bit in another country and shared it with others, also. This vintage vulcanized red fiber material served me well in several early auto projects, but with nothing else planned I decided to scatter it in T land. The first batch of washers sold out quickly. I have ONLY 10 more , same price, $25 each ppd. Unless lightning strikes a 3rd time, this is it for me. I’m not interested in the debate whether right or wrong to use it in your Ruckstell rebuild. It was good enough for Glover Ruckstell, so it’s good enough for me . Tmorsher@icloud.com is the only way to reach me, except for visiting hours at the honor farm on Sunday.

Oops, I see Davis already claimed them... darn. Any idea for a good substitute that works?
