Model T Engine Stand
Original Model T Engine Stand. Saved decades ago by Henry Austin Clark Jr. and was at the Long Island Automotive Museum until he passed. From there it came to me and I have had it since. I've never seen one like it and if Clark saved it, then it was certainly a rare piece and worth saving.

Re: Model T Engine Stand
I believe that is a "running-in" stand for rebuilt engines.

Re: Model T Engine Stand
Looks like a burn-in stand, belt driven it was used to "limber up" a new engine or one that has just been re-rabbeted. nice piece,
Do it right or do it over, your choice. Drive like everyone is out to get you!

Re: Model T Engine Stand
Would be neat in an old machine shop to power the belt drive machinery.

I wish this was near me! I believe that Steve is correct. If it was to run a pulley it would need something to hold a radiator.

Re: Model T Engine Stand
I believe it is an early one, before they switched to electric powered run in stands as seen in pic

Re: Model T Engine Stand
That's a run-in stand. It needs to be cleaned up and put to use. See Figure 171, page 69, Ford Model T service book. I'd guess you'd need about 8-10 horsepower to run it.

Re: Model T Engine Stand
It must be an early one, looking at the working one pictured it’s electric not belt drive. The picture above has an engine that is either a 12 or 13 judging from what I believe is a Aluminium 12 oiler/commutator plus the 4 ball carburetor & needle nosed pan. Must have been a more northern car engine as it has a heater cover on the manifold. Also behind the back of the stand there is another engine, is that an H1 carb on it? Boy that’s a really nice piece, any one that builds engines would be lucky to own it. I’m surprised it survived World War II SCRAP metal drives.
Re: Model T Engine Stand
Is there a name on it?

Re: Model T Engine Stand
I believe, regardless of it's age or when it was used, it is driven by a flat belt, and the lever in a couple of the pictures activates a clutch to slowly transfer the spinning power created by the belt into energy to turn the engine from the back end; that square stub-shaft probably fits a T engine/transmission unit the same way a universal joint does.
It's a guess, but it sounds possible.

Re: Model T Engine Stand
Bill I agree with you on the original pictures, I was referring to the period picture just above my post. It clearly is not belt driven. That’s a really nice one pictured for sell.

Re: Model T Engine Stand
Wait a minute, there is electrical equipment with gauges connected to the one in the photo. Is this a dawn-of-the-automobile dynamometer? Agree on the lever operated clutch, would seem likely to softly engage a new engine to a test load. You guys are incredible at analyzing old pix, can you tell what those operators are thinking? ????Bill

The guy in the bowler is saying I hope he doesn’t flip the switch (in other guys hand) on this thing I’m brushed up against the the darn electrical connections. Other guy is thinking “well Stanley it’s another fine mess you’ve got yourself into”

Re: Model T Engine Stand
In the teens to early 1920's a small rural machine shop or auto repair place, that found business rebuilding Ford engines, may not have had access to the AC power needed to run their shop, and was still using a line shaft powered by one big industrial engine. They could use this type run in stand powered off their line shaft to bring in rebuld business. A shop some what like the one recreated at the MTFCA museum.

Re: Model T Engine Stand
To answer an earlier question about the weight, I'm really not sure. It would probably be best moved with a backhoe or other large equipment, or maybe a very heavy duty dolly.
Apologies if I have been slow to respond to emails. I'll be going through them this afternoon and responding to all of them.

This burn in stand was delivered sold at Chickasha in 2007, nice condition, and with all the attachments

Wonder where it is now. My friend with me that year was so glad it was not for sale.
