The gear tooth damage is not typical fatigue failure. Joe has a good eye for the cause of damage, water damage. .

I believe there is both rust and wear damage. The wear damage is typically right across some of the teeth. I see far more one piece gears worn like this, likely to be a product of the load being applied to the narrower gear teeth on one piece gears. I much prefer to use the three piece gears with the full width teeth, providing they have not run with loose rivets. These are usually far less worn, but can be more difficult to balance.
