SOLD Pair of early headlamps for sale VIOLET GLASS LENS

Post by Dropacent » Thu Jun 17, 2021 12:24 pm

SOLD ….nice pair of early headlamps. I believe these are late 1915-1918ish headlamps. Do your research. Two prong bulb contacts, they appear to have been nice old restored as I see red oxide primer peeking through. I may have some loose single prong sockets. Outstanding reflectors, and H lenses with the violet hue. $250 + post. Tmorsher@icloud.com to reach me. Thanks!

Nice lamps! Good matching pairs of those can be difficult to find. The early manufacturing resulted in numerous minor variations in the buckets. When I was putting pieces together for my 1915 project, I wound up with five early buckets very similar to these. Only two of the buckets were a close match. Variations mostly included differences in the flat area surrounding the plug socket, how deep the manufacturer's name stamping was. Some early headlamps had no flat area surrounding the plug socket. I don't claim to know all the timelines of which variation was used when.

Those lenses of course are not 1915. While the purple is desirable to many people, and often erroneously believed to be pre-WW1, they were not manufactured before late 1920.
The purple lenses are interesting. As mentioned by others, it is a result of the chemicals used to stabilize the glass. Why some (small percentage) of Ford's 'H' lenses will turn purple? And what years they were originally used? I don't know. I would suspect the lenses that turn purple may have come from one outside supplier. But that would only be a guess. Maybe they were replacements? I have seen a few unrestored 1926/'27 cars with purple lenses. Whether that means anything or not?

Thanks Wayne, I believe these came off a 1915 coupelet that had been refitted with the large rim brass headlamps at restoration. When I was growing up in the hobby, nobody wanted violet lenses. Can’t remember how many we passed by. Nobody wanted them. Tastes change. I can sell the lenses separate, as you said they are not of the age of the lights. Still available, just write to me at tmorsher@icloud.com

Bump to top. I can sell lenses separate from lamps. Also have a very nice pair of brass rims (26-7) for sale. Let me know what works. Don’t be afraid to dicker

Bump $200 and I keep the glass lenses , the reflectors alone are worth the asking price, have you tried to find nice ones lately? Have you priced new silver plate? The lamps are the early style, I’m Thinking 1915-16-17-18ish, but do your research
