Show us some pictures of the roughest parts. I have discovered a great way to repair the open car cowls and have many photos. Don’t start cutting. I am out of town until the weekend but will post upon my return. This is a game changer for these cars.

The cowl looks good but it's bent/dented on the passenger side by the windshield stanchion, the window stanchion is also bent, it's does not look terrible but I just don't know how to fix it, what ever did this it also sheared a few rivets at the frame, the bolt for the stanchion that is closest to the dash, I had to put a 1" thick spacer/washer in there because you cant get a nut in there and the door is hinge bound. the other side has almost the same problems but there is to much bondo to see it, other than that the cowl looks top notch.

Be patient, I will send photos of what I have done. I think you have a good one to work with. What are the side bottoms like? Two pics, outside and inside.

Bruce,
I posted the entire cowl section in a state of autopsy. The heading is: "Open Car Surgery And Build". It shows everything you need to know about what you are concerned with. I think you said you read it. Does that not explain it clearly enough? You can write to me or call and I will do what I can to help. I would not discard that cowl only to engage in another course of frustration, it's like replacing half a foundation under a house and trying to make the roof line up. The troubles you have now are small compared to what you will bring cutting a sub frame. If you are not comfortable doing body work, it's just money between now and what you want.

The picture of your damaged 27 cowl that you posted last year doesn’t show enough damage to warrant all the alignment problems you will get into trying to change out you cowl, even if you found a perfect replacement cowl, which you won’t find. To fix your cowl remove the gas tank, dash, windshield post, and door at hinge pins. Read up on basic body working and tools first and practice on some scrap. Carefully work the crease and dents out from behind using basic body work tools. The 1926-27 windshield posts do not mount with standard nuts on the back side, they take special threaded metal tabs that lock against the cowl support frame, try Lang’s for these tabs. By the way the windshield post in your picture is a early 26 type with out the extra metal on the back side at the cowl mount.
