Keep Your Model T Original with Factory Spec. Drive Shaft Roller Bearing Assembly SOLD

Post by henryford2 » Sat Sep 11, 2021 2:00 pm

Keep your Model T original and use parts that meet the original Ford specifications and avoid the costly modern bearing driveshaft roller bearing alternative offered today! I would suggest that if you are unfamiliar with the dimensions of these individual parts and how they relate to each other read the follow post with Trent Boggess's contribution. http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/41 ... 1396298000. Bottom line, with the parts meeting the Ford print requirements there is an opportunity for this assembly to have as much as .007 clearance from the factory. Using a combination of new and good used parts the assembly offered meets that maximum clearance of .007. Hyatt bearing is used, Hyatt inner sleeve is new, 1921-27 open spool is used and has been bead blasted, trust collars and trust bearing show no wear (never used?). Price is $100 shipped to you door. I’m amazed you have to lower the price to sell these. It’ll last your lifetime. It would last me many lifetimes.

Willing to bet that very few people take the time to measure up these parts, they end up using parts out of spec., or replace good parts with one of the expensive modern replacements. The "Black" repair book really does not provide any guidance as to what is good or not.

I am glad to see that the Hyatt bearing clearance problem is starting to be addressed. Clearance is important with these wound roller bearings, because of the high misalignment of the bearing when under load.
The Hyatt rear wheel bearing application is another case that needs closer study. These bearings need a lot of clearance based on my calculations and experience.

Art, you should have filled your lunch box up with these when you were still making them! Glad to have your experience. Our mutual friend , Mel, has discussed the two speed bicycle axle with me. Great experience, please continue to share.

When you do the math with un-worn parts. The original clearance was 001" The Hyatte "spring" could compress as needed.

What are you talking about , two speed bicycle axle?
I remember as a kid I was riding my sisters bicycle and it would be easy to pedal and then it would be hard to pedal. I figured out that if I tap the brake it would go to a lower gear and if I tapped it again it would go to a higher gear. I’ve never seen another one and nobody I know has ever seen one.
Is this what you are referring to?

New Departure division of General Motors made single speed coaster brake hubs up to about 1955. In the early 50s they marketed a 2 speed axle hub with a built-in coaster brake. I think that is what is referred to.
New Departure and Hyatt division of General Motors merged into one division of GM on March 1, 1965. This entity became New Departure Hyatt and was headquartered in Sandusky, Ohio.

John, I think .001 is way too tight and doubt you could ever get that, even with NOS stuff. Robbie, I’ll share a picture of the shifter. Friend Mel called it a “ball buster” for obvious reasons. New Departure Two Speed. Makes driving a balloon tire bike a breeze! I’d be glad to hear what Art says about tolerances on the driveshaft bearings. He knows more about bearings than anybody I know. AND, it would be great to repost Prof. Boggess article in whole.

Robbie, this a New Departure two speed. This is on wifeys bike, so obviously not a “ball buster”.

Talking about the T drive shaft. Ford seems to use standard fraction sizes universally. Have had some NOS & very good parts, Bearing rollers .562" Sleeve 1.250. Spool 2.3750" That computes to very little clearance. The parts sold had some wear. Sleeve does look new? It all adds up to the .007 shown. I consider Excellent for used parts. Due to the load nature, I put that load to the least or unworn side of the spool.

Likewise axle bearings standard @ .5000" Axles 1.0625". I cant go much further on axle clearances, as the sleeves vary in thickness between venders, (I have not had any NOS) I rarely find an original, ford sleeve good enough to reuse,(I am particular) and the rough nature of the axle housing adds an unknown factor to me. If I can match the sleeve thickness, axle & bearing wear to where the bearing will go in without a hammer, I think its correct. If it slides in real easy, too loose.

Tim,
I seem to remember seeing this setup also. Think we even had a 3 speed with something similar.
I’ve always thought about that tap the brake 2 speed and wonder what is was and how it works. Thought you might have been referring the same one like my sister had.

I am planning to have lunch with the New Departure Hyatt chief engineer when then wound roller bearing ceased production in 1989. I will discuss the axle and the driveshaft bearing clearances.
