WTB - Oilstone Powder

Post by Scott_Conger » Sun Nov 21, 2021 12:53 pm

I know there are clock and watchmakers or at least watch/clock hobbiests in the T hobby, so am asking you to go through your old bench and sell me your bottle of Oilstone Powder. My guess is that you have seldom if ever used it, can't remember where you got it, and are not sure where it is...

If this is YOU, then please contact me and let me know what you have. I will use it and not just store it.

thanks for looking

Scott couldn’t you use sewing machine oil with shavings from the Whetstone? Cheap & plentiful if you have a whetstone that has been worn down so much that it’s unusable? Can’t tripoli be used also?

Bill

it is what it is. Oilstone Powder - as opposed to a solid oilstone in your toolbox for your boy scout knife. It is mixed with high grade oil and used in conjunction with a mild steel lapping plate to relatively quickly bring objects to a flat surface with a blemish-free but dull finish.

It could be commonly found at any jewelers' supply house up into the 1990's. It was obsolete for 40 years even then... it was originally used to make things that most people didn't want, for a price they could not afford.

You may have guessed that I am the King of Useless Things

So, how goes the quest? any closer?

Scott, in order to get from one place to another place, you first have to cover half the distance. Then you must cover half the remaining distance, then half the remaining distance, and so forth over and over. The net result is you never can quite get anywhere. That answer your question? :) Cheers, Bill

I have a diamond plate that performs a similar function. It is a steel plate with diamond dust that is nickel plated onto the surface. I use it to keep my woodworking tools razer sharp. They can be seen at Woodworker Supply, woodworker.com.

Tried to research oilstone powder. Came across Arkansas Oilstone Powder watch maker products etc. There is a company in Germany that lists it but their website, in English, doesn't show price or how to add it to a cart https://boley.de/en/shop/3766.assortmen ... one-powder

One website discusses the Holy Grail powder "The literature commonly refers to using Oilstone powder (powdered arkansas stone) for steel preparation, prior to final polishing with Diamantine (finely ground aluminium oxide powder). I have also found that using a medium grade Carborundum is a very effective first stage preparation, prior to the Oilstone powder. http://www.clickspringprojects.com/blog ... ding-paste

I found references to Arkansas Stone as being made from Novaculite mined in Arkansas
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novaculite
Because novaculite is very hard and dense, it has been mined since prehistoric times, first for use as arrow and spear points, and later to make sharpening stones. Novaculite-rich sharpening stones from Arkansas are called Arkansas stones; stones produced in the Ottoman empire (Syria, Lebanon, and Israel) were called Turkey stones;[3] and novaculite stones were also produced in Japan.
The weathered upper strata of Arkansas novaculite, known as tripoli or "rotten stone", are rich in silica and have found a niche market as a performance additive or filler in the coatings, adhesives, sealants, and elastomer industries. Tripoli is mined just east of Hot Springs, Arkansas by the Malvern Minerals Company.

Diamantine Polishing Powder 60gis available https://www.eternaltools.com/diamantine ... powder-60g
"When mixed with a drop of oil, this super fine Diamantine powder produces a fast cutting abrasive for polishing pivots and jewels, leaving you with a mirror finish. This 60g pot from Horotec is a top quality powder of fine grade aluminium oxide. Suitable for a number of polishing jobs on steel, steel alloys and jewels when watchmaking and clock making. $21.80 "
The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.
