FOUND : Figure 8 front shackle

Post by DanTreace » Fri Jan 21, 2022 11:29 am

Thanks to Tim and Rich. They are sending me the shackles needed! That’s all for the comments!

Dan.

Figure 8 front shackle wanted, (1913-1917) with threaded boss for oiler.
Only one complete shackle needed, prefer one in good used condition, like this photo.

Thanks, Dan Treace

I don't think half of that shackle is original.

Because of the oil hole positions? But which is the original, top-right?

You can't see low left but it will be threaded also, shackles require two oilers per set.

Larry,
Could you tell us which half is correct for that year?

To me this shackle is correct, at least for my use. Both pieces have oiler bosses.

Just need another like it to hang my front axle!

This is the only one I have. All threads look good. Shaft is very worn and the end going through the shaft hole is a bit loose. There are no markings or numbers.

Thanks for the try Frank, you are right, a bit too worn out for use.
Appreciate the looking for that worn pair, but really need a set or one half of a front set in good to use shape!

I've read in the old Forums that some have tried to restore shackles, is that done, or only for those that are rare like Mae West's?

Steve Jelf has welded up worn Mae West shackles and turned them back down to standard size on a lathe:

Mark, ……..and then it broke on the way to greenfield village. He was lucky. VERY BAD idea to amateur repair any driveline part like that. It’s a pet peeve of mine, but as always, JMHO ! As Dan shows, good ones are out there , just ask. Also great reproduction parts from Chaffin’s

I had some Mae West ones welded up….. a friend took them into the Jeep plant in Toledo, welded them up, turned them down and had them hardened to specs. It sure helps if you have the equipment available.

That’s the rub, David. That’s for a professional to do. You can sleep at night, and so can the driver of the oncoming car.
