WTB or trade for tire flap

Post by RGould1910 » Sun May 22, 2022 4:38 pm

Looking for one 30 x 3 flap. New or good used. Will trade 30 x 3 1/2 flap or puchase outright. I see vendors sell them new but it's hard to justify almost $40 for an item that used to cost $10.

You can make your own flap from an old tube. Use an old bad/repatched tube with 0$ value.

Richard, you are a week late!!!
Lucas sent me a 30x3 flap by accident and we have arranged to return it for the 30 x 3 1/2 that was due to me. This would have been the perfect swap! Dang!!

Just my luck, Scott!
Thanks for the tip, John. If I can't find one I may give it a try. The flaps are noticeably thicker than tubes, I wonder if they protect against puncture when mounting just as well. Your thoughts, experiences, etc..

A cut up old tube IS NOT the same as a flap!

Better than nothing.
I would expect a bit less protection being thinner, but is does provide a layer of protection from the gap between the tire beads & gap to the bare steel rim. It will give some pinch protection & allow you to push the extra rubber(flap) & tube back in whall mounting. It will be more difficult to get a good install with a modified tube. They must be centered around the tube just as a normal flap should be.
Flaps are not a mandatory thing. They do make the job much more idiot (pinch) proof.
I used flaps on 21" wire wheels, but not on my '14. Flaps worked well on a recent 21" split rim job as well.

The piece of old tube staying in place during fitting is not likely. A better solution is rim liner cut from the outside diameter of a 13" car tube, or from a 20" bicycle tube. These are a snap fit on the rim and will not migrate to places unwanted. Fit both beads of the tyre at the same time and the tyre levers will not get at your rube, negating the need for $40 insurance policy in the form of a heavy flap.

Hope this helps.
