for sale: exhaust manifold Ford script $80 plus postage

Melba, Just a reminder that a photo and a note that says "looks good" doesn't cut it. You need to put a straight edge along the ports showing they are in perfect alignment or it could be an expensive bad experience for the buyer. A new, perfect one is not cost prohibitive. We need to start imposing specs of wear areas to protect our great hobby.

Maybe it's just me, but in the photos that clearly show the manifold sitting on the straight edge with all four ports on the same plane, she sure "looks good" to me. Maybe you need to get your eye sight checked before you criticize someone else's item for sale. We need to start imposing a bit more kindness with each other to protect our great hobby.

I agree with Ken that the manifold needs to be checked for warp across the face of the ports as well as across the bottom edges. Melba's photo shows a good bottom edge having no sagging. I borrowed the photo below from an old forum that shows a bit of warpage on the port circled.

Rough cast does not allow for a good reading, the machining does. These are photos of a new manifold and a warped one.
I am kind, fair, honest and always willing to hear others opinions. Furthermore, I have had a few phone conversations with Melba and, I believe, we have a mutual respect for each other.

The only unkind words I'm reading in this thread are yours. Ken's photos show the correct way to check an exhaust manifold.

I saw this earlier and the manifold looks good to me. I wouldn’t except used parts to be factory perfect. If I had a question about a used part I would contact the seller privately. The manifold is straight and when installed it would fit fine.

I've got to say, it looks straight to me too. FWIW

The straight edge is not in a place that shows if it’s warped or not. It should be on the side of the holes and placed so that the straightedge is touching the bottom edge of all
the openings.

Here is how you show a manifold with a straightedge to determine warp. This manifold is warped.

That's how I've always done it - align #1 & #4 and see where the middle is.

That's a valid check too. They seem to be more prone to warpage in the other plane however. (I might question how flat your I-Beam is, considering it appears to be the top of a hydraulic press. Wondering if repeated use of the press may have induced a slight arch in that beam.)

No need to apologize Melba. I came across a T vendor here in Canada that had 7 decent looking script manifolds that he swore up and down were not warped. Actually they were OK in one plane but badly warped in the other (vertically). I showed him how to check them and all 7 were not even close to being useable. The manifolds warp because many "mechanics" just use flat gaskets instead of the 2-piece ring and gland type that locates the ports properly to the block and prevents the manifold from drooping (warping).

I always carried a piece of string at swap meets to check them. Just pull tight from the bottom edge of front port to bottom edge of back port. The middle ports should fall in line on the bottom if it is straight.
