WTB - Steering box (speedster build)
Thinking of a directional change, instead of a model A box, using a “bolt on” (side to side) box for the speedster. What are some generally agreeable applications that someone would be willing to part with? A period piece would be cool, if possible (and in budget).
Thanks - Doug

Find the gear box out of an early '60's VW transport - simple mounting bracket to T frame - 2 & 1/4 turns lock to lock.

early Chevrolet, I believe "490" is a good period choice, I may have one.

That is a good one, wonder if that is what John Gerber used? Finished moving the house over the weekend and have no clue where my books are (they are not in the garage, which I finally now have all to myself). Think you might have a set of finned Chevy drums that you have massaged a bit too?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Very nice! Not quite the era I was aiming for, more along the lines of early 20’s before the fore and aft boxes became the norm. I do miss the H.A.M.B.

I have a Ross steering box that would work great for a speedster. Will post pics for you tomorrow. It’s a worm gear. And I think from the period you are looking for.

Here are pics. I think I emailed everyone back who inquired. OP has first dibs, wide open after that. Asking $650 plus shipping. Internals look awesome, still good oily grease in there, no rust. I can’t feel any slop when I turn the shaft and hold the steering arm.

Yes, Gerber used the same style Chevy steering box I mentioned.

Nobody has mentioned using a Franklin box. That is truly period. Will take fabrication to mount. You will lose spark and throttle levers which could also be fabricated.

Re: WTB - Steering box (speedster build)
I've got this column, original application unknown. It had a locking fatman wheel which is missing along with the gear cover. I was down at Dave Huson's a couple years ago,80 miles south and five over, and he had a nice wheel that may have worked with this center. It was a similar style but he didn't want to sell it. I've stopped by a couple times since but he wasn't home. Would like to get $125 for this column plus shipping. Maybe Dave would turn loose of the wheel now and a cover would have to be made with an adjusting bolt. Shouldn't be too difficult. Also some bracket to connect to the frame. Holler with a PM if interested.
