WTB: 1912 touring car boot for pattern or usable top and boot

Post by Nathanael Logsdon » Tue May 28, 2019 4:46 pm

Does anyone have an original or accurate reproduction top boot that is no longer serviceable, but could be used for a pattern? I have the equipment and skills, but working from photographs is proving difficult. My bows look a little skeletal without anything on them, but the car looks better with the bows on the back. Looks like something's missing without them.

Alternately, if someone has a USABLE boot AND/OR a top for said 1912 touring that is reasonably priced, I would be interested in that as well. Just can't swing the cost of a new one right now after buying the car, then buying parts to make it go! Awful hot driving in the sun though... ;)

I have a pattern for a 1911 which is the same than 1912 I believe. I don`t know if it is urgent for you, I will do mine this summer and my pattern will be available in the Fall. If that work for you, I could sell it to you for the same price. I bought it for $150. And if you planned to go at Hershey swap meet I could bring there at no cost.

Kind regards,

Mario

I would be happy to help you if I can. I have two original 1913 boots. As far as I know the 1912's are similar. I have never seen a reproduction that is made correctly. I have made three that are exact copies. The originals used jute welting material, and to my knowledge is not currently available. I've been using twisted Kraft paper in it's place, and works well, and goes around corners easily. In my research, I have determined there were two companies that made the boots in 1913. They are similar, but different.

Nathanael:

I am working of a pattern for my 1911.
There is no "evidence that top boots were offered in 1911, but there are a lot of pictures of some.

Note that some has three fasteners on each side, some have two.
All of them show where the Murphy Fastener is straining against the boot as it were a cold day.
This one has a "deeper" flap which goes a low as the second bow and used the Murphy Fasteners on the bows to attach the boot.

I would be interested in seeing pictures of yours.

Here is a paper template of the boot I am working on. It is based upon the bottom image above.

Also note in the middle two pictures above sometimes the cover ends high on the seat back, and sometimes is comes down almost to the top buttons.

Keith,
Would it be possible to get a copy of your paper template? It looks phenomenal!

Keith: Hi From Iowa! If possible I would like to get a paper pattern to make a boot for my early '12 touring (2piece dash car)? I would be glad to buy this of course. Many Thanks John

Mike from Classtique makes an awesome top boot.
Give him a call. He made the one for my 14, and it fits perfectly. A 12 boot is 4 inches wider, but the same design.
