OT: WTB: 1916 Studebaker Engine

I am posting this for a friend in Austria/Europe. He is in need of a 1916 Studebaker FS engine/complete cylinder head assembly as his has multiple cracks and is beyond repair. I am not knowledgeable on the subject and only repeating what has been interpreted to me from German. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

are you sure the engine he's looking for has a head? I have a Series 16 (1916 model year) four cylinder engine, but it had the head integral with the block, but the block detaches from the crankcase.

Hey there Dan H! Good to see you here. I of course thought of you the moment I read this thread's title. ( For others, I have known Dan for many years, and he is a great guy, model Ts and other antique automobiles, etc.) I suspect the engine he is referring to is the one he got from me a few years ago, although he has acquired some other Studebaker parts and pieces, so it could be another one.
If I recall correctly, Studebaker did not adopt the removable head until about 1918. Their "year model" "calendar year" and "series model" is a bit tough to sort out for non-Studebaker folks. Fortunately for most people, they went back to common practice "model years" about 1920. The mid to late '10s Studebaker models drive some people crazy!
A quick refresh from Kimes and Clark, the "SF" model was the four cylinder built in the latter half of 1915/'16/'17 and all used the non-removable head on the motors. The 1918/'19 model "SH" "light four" was a very similar motor. However, if I recall correctly (a good friend many years ago had one), it had a removable head (I could be wrong about that?). The engine was similar size, clutch flywheel and I think manifolds were very similar to the 1915 built series 16. He was rebuilding the spare engine for his car, and I had a good look at most of it, however, that was 25 years ago. The "SH" is a fairly rare car.
It is entirely possible that the engine in the Austrian friend's car may have been replaced with an SH motor. Better details (and maybe serial numbers?) would help.
Also, there are some really good Studebaker websites. I could try to find those if that would help. I haven;t frequented them for several years now since I was forced to sell my car (however, Dan is taking wonderfully good care of it!).

I was just wondering if the 14 - 18 Studebakers were built to a military spec as many were used as ambulances and trucks in WW1. After the war there were many used as a hearse, delivery trucks and fitted with classic bodies for the rich and famous. They were big heavy durable vehicles that appear to have been possibly of a military origin.

I HATE TO EVAN SAY THIS, BUT YEARS AGO MY GRAND FATHER HAD A STUDI, TOURING, MAN IT WAS BIG, I THINK IT WAS A 16, US BRATS WOULD [AFTER HAYING] RAM THIS POOR THING AROUND THE FIELDS FAST AS WE COULD GET IT GOING, THE ONE TIME WE TOOK IT OUT ON THE ROAD[DIRT] THE LOCAL FUZZ [FANNY] COUGHT US, ME AND MY BROTHER, FANNY KNEW DAD SO HE FOLLOWED US HOME THAT WAS THAT, DAD MADE US DISMANTLE THAT CAR, WE USED THE ENGINE FOR A SAW RIG FOR YEARS,AS I REMEMBER THE ENGINE IS BURIED IN THE EAST FIELD, THAT'S WHERE THE FARM DUMP WAS, THIS WAS AT LEAST FIFTY YEARS AGO, I REMEMBER TRYING TO TAKE THE BRASS WATER PUMP OFF FOR SCRAP IT WAS HUGE, BUT GAVE UP TOO MUCH WORK, CANT BE MUCH GOOD NOW,ONE OF THOSE THINGS I WISH I NEVER DID, THAT CAR JUST OUT LIVED ITS TIME , WHAT A BARN FIND IT WOULD BE IF ONLY BRAT KIDS LEFT IT ALONE.

Additional information for the knowledgeable guys:
It is definitely a 1916 SF Model 17 with integral cylinder and head.
Engine number: 485095
We'll pass any leads on to our Austrian friend.

Has anyone had any success in repairing cracks in this type block or does anyone know of someone who has been successful in making this type of repair?

There have been earlier threads on repairing broken blocks. I recall photos of chunks missing
and cut from other blocks to "stitch" together, to save a special/numbers matching block.

Have you tried your local Studebaker dealership ? The early ones often carry a large selection
of mechanical parts like this. ;)
