FS: Rajo 4 valve head

I really like the way my speedster runs with this head, but family issues dictate that I need the $ from it more than the head itself. When things settle down in the future I’ll get another one.

For sale is an aluminum Rajo 4 valve head, taken off of a speedster that runs like a scalded dog. No cracks, no leaks, no issues, again, I just need the money. Please feel free to ask questions. Has 1 piece rocker arm so that towers don’t move. No valve covers, just the mechanical oilers up top. Grooves in top of rocker arm distribute oil to the rockers.

Asking $4,000 plus shipping, but I’ve gotta move it so make me an offer. Head has all bolts and parts, throw it on your car and bolt up an intake and you’re in business.

Do you have the carburetor and intake for it?

I have a dual intake with a matching pair of U&J carbs that I could add to sweeten the deal, but that would drive the price up another $1,100.

If I include the intake and the two carbs, I’d ask $5,000 plus shipping.

Do you have the valve covers? Leaving the exposed to road dust on the top might cause some issues.

No valve covers, I had some years ago but another gentleman purchased those from me. I’ve had this head on my speedster and done all kinds of off-roading, but I’ve never had any issues with dirt or dust. I just keep the oilers full and flowing.

It will depend on what cam you run, what exhaust, and whether you run this intake and carb setup I have or something different.

I would guess the head by itself is worth a good 20-25. Dual exhaust or a big header and tube are probably worth 3-4 more, and dual carbs worth something like 7 or 8. Altogether, probably 35 or so horsepower more, on top of your base 20. 55 total horses is probably about right, or at least in the ballpark.

In my speedster with this setup I have enough acceleration that I can keep up with modern traffic without slowing anyone down. If I didn’t really really need the money this wouldn’t be for sale.

This is a very good deal for a basically "bolt on 4 valve head" Most need lots of work. I spent a lot of time and a lot more money getting my 4 valve head ready to go. The U&J carbs are considered one of the better "zoom-zoom" carbs and then to have two of them :) :). This setup on Seth's car was a beast..... Hate to see you selling it. but family comes first.

As far as I know the Rajo 4 valve is the only OHV head that fits with no modifications to the firewall of a stock T.

This is an aluminum head and my understanding is that it’s an older reproduction. As to whether it came from Australia originally, I have no idea.

Nice looking head. Any idea of the compression ratio? Would one need to run a water pump with this setup?

Before I bought my 4 valve head I did a lot of research into them and the stories of bad repro heads. I came to the conclusion that the Australian repro heads were good heads. The Australian heads were cast in cast iron and also aluminum. As far as I could find out , all original 4 valve heads are cast iron. I could never find a person who said that one of the heads that actually was made by the man in Australia was bad. There were shipping issues, people not receiving heads, ect., but no bad heads. The bad heads seems to be the ones that were made in California by the "second generation" builder who bought the rights and patterns from the Australian builder. There are stories of the head bolt holes not lining up, rocker towers being located where the rockers just barely caught the valve stems, poor castings and other things. From my research I think those heads were never meant to be sold. They may have been mistakes, that were thrown in the scrap bin, that were either stolen or taken home by workers, with the idea to repair them for their own use. (or.???) Those heads somehow ended up back on the market thru estates, swap meets, or ????. So the good repro 4 valve heads tend to have an unearned bad rep...

The head Seth has for sale is not one of those "bad heads" his head is a tested and ran head with none of those issues.

I wish I had found a deal like this before I spent a lot of time and money on getting my 4 valve head ready to go.

I have no dog in this fight. It just happens that Seth and I were both buying and setting up our 4 valve heads about the same time. So I know how much time and effort as well as expense went into setting up the head as well as his carb setup...

Bob the compression is probably pretty similar to a stock T low head. The combustion chamber isn’t small, but it cuts out the whole area where the intake valve would normally be. I ran mine with domed pistons, and my T had as much or more compression as any one I’ve ever tried to hand crank. Just going by “feel” compared to known T’s, with domed pistons I was probably around 6 to 1.

No need for a water pump, my speedster ran fine without it and never overheated. Just had a clean block and decent rad.

Seth those are running around 6:5 to 7:00 to 1 with domed pistons. Nice torque for sure.
