Re: Hershey news
Very sad indeed. There are no winners with it being cancelled so I’m sure it was practical matters that prevented it from going on as planned.

Re: Hershey news
I don't like this, of course, but I was expecting it. Let's hope that next year there will be a vaccine and we'll all be bullet-proof again. But remember that after almost forty years there's no AIDS vaccine, and after many more decades there's no vaccine for the virus known as the common cold.

Re: Fall Hershey
About the only cheerful thing I can say about it is that, since Hershey was canceled for this year, then I am DEFINITELY going in 2021. Think of all the stuff that didn't get sold this year at Chickasha, Bakersfield, and Hershey. It's thin this year, but next year maybe it will be like a Thanksgiving Turkey, with more stuff than you can shake a "tiny cart to haul it around in" at. At least I hope so. Maybe next year we'll have to take a BIG cart to hold all the stuff we buy!.

I am incredibly disappointed to hear this as I look forward to the event every year. It absolutely amazes and scares me that we are allowing government "officials" ruin our lives. These people have zero authority to tell us what to do and this fake pandemic is nothing but a political maneuver to remove a president form office.

Re: Fall Hershey
I called the hotel this morning to see about moving my reservations from 2020 to 2021. The desk clerk said that the governor has decreed that hotels HAVE to offer free cancellations or changes to reservations affected by the pandemic (with no corresponding compensation to the hotels), but the decree doesn't currently go out far enough to cover the Hershey meet (yet). He suggested I try again about a month before the meet, by which time they should know whether they will still be required to offer free cancellations or changes.

Re: Hershey news
I'm very sad, I went to Hershey the last 12 years with my dad's meeting friends and nice people. I really hope he will be in good shape to go there again next year with me. It is a father and son trip every year which we take time to be together one week alone without any stress.
I would say let's beat that COVID-19 and stand-up together. Together we are stronger!

Thanks to Scott Adams author of Dillbert. I'll miss Hershey as well it's been a yearly tradition just like all the rest of the things we all are missing out on this year, car shows, tours, homecomings, ect. But we must be safe. Jim

Re: Hershey news
So are you saying " government "officials" ruin our lives. These people have zero authority to tell us what to do" and that we should dispense: the entire legal system to allow murder, rape, theft, etc..; with traffic laws; the minimum wage; building codes; environmental regulations; I could go on.Tim Rogers wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 7:21 amIt absolutely amazes and scares me that we are allowing government "officials" ruin our lives. COVID-19 is not fake. I understand that people living in rural communities don't experience the same effect as those in the big cities but it only takes one (1) person to infect an entire community. The High School Complex in Columbus Junction, Iowa is larger than the meat packing plant where 1,100 people were infected with the virus. The population of the town is 1,500 people. It has 1 gas station, a Dollar General, 1 supermarket and 3 restaurants. There are several small communities nearby, hence the High School Complex. So you should feel lucky that you live where you do, but watch out for people moving into it from NYC. Be Safe Frank

Re: Hershey news
Frank-
It appears that you are like many other Americans in that you are completely unaware that no SINGLE elected or appointed individual in Federal, State or local government has the authority to instruct free citizens to do anything. The President, state governors, county executives and mayors in this country do not posses any power over the citizenry- our constitution has guaranteed us this fact. As citizens we are only required to follow laws that are passed by the legislatures.
The following "officials" and organizations do not make laws and have no authority over you/us:
The President
Governors
County Executives
Mayors
Judges
Law enforcement
Individual members of Congress
Health Departments
CDC "officials"
WHO "officials"
FBI
CIA
The media
& etc.
Lastly, I never made any statements that claimed the virus or the deaths associated with it aren't real.

In these times, I think it is simple, common, courtesy to avoid crowds of over 10 people, get closer than 6 feet, or go out in public without a mask.

Like Steve J. pointed out, there is no vaccine for the AIDS virus or the common cold virus.
Sadly, the social events that we have all come to enjoy and participate in will probably be changed from here on out by limiting the number of participants or inconvenient and ridiculous rules to abide by. Some events will probably be gone for good. I hope I am wrong. Time will tell.

Re: Fall Hershey
Well, I just want to say 2 things:
The VAST MAJORITY of Model T people, and antique car people in general, are older. This is the group that suffers the most deaths from Covid 19.
Encouraging actions that may result in the deaths of a sizeable portion of our club is supremely stupid. THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT "MAKING" YOU DO ANYTHING. THE COVID-19 IS!
With nearly everyone in our local Model T club being over 60, and many in their 70's and 80's, we stand a real possibility of both literally and figuratively killing the club in it's entirety.
The same situation applies to the local machinist club. Most of our members in that are also elderly. Again, if we let Covid 19 loose in that group, we soon would not have a group at all. All of those meetings have been canceled until we either have a vaccine, or Covid-19 dies out naturally.
The second point I want to make is a perfect illustration of how things COULD have been here.
New Zealand listened to their doctors and scientists, and clamped down instantly. They lost a final total of just 95 people to Covid 19, and the pandemic is OVER for them. All their businesses, schools, theaters, shopping centers, parks, sports venues, EVERYTHING, is back to normal now.
We could have had that here! This virus was known about in December, and warnings were given in January. These were all brushed off as "fake news" and plots by the "deep state" to manipulate "Free Citizens"
What drivel and stupidity!
This pandemic WILL continue here, as long as stupid people make idiotic decisions. If you want it to end, listen to the doctors and scientists, and ignore everything else.

Oily
Are you a member of the LDS? You must have quite a food supply to be so well isolated. Congratulations to you for your forsight!
Tim
You are of course, correct with your Civics Lesson. With so many of the older generation frequenting here, regardless of their personal views (and all are valid...for them), there seems to be hysterical amnesia regarding who has what authority in America. In a country the size of the USA, with porous borders, for anyone to believe that staying home in the dark will eradicate this virus has not been looking out the window or watching the news to see the vast difference in mortality results between being couped up inside, and walking around in the sunshine (OOPS, a little bit of inconvenient science).
FWIW, I personally, would never subject myself to such large crowds right now. No one in a marble building needs to tell me not to. I don't need a warning on the toilet paper roll that reminds one to remove the wrapping first, before use, either. Both just seem to be common sense; a trait that is sorely lacking these days.

Scott-
Well said! The nonsense surrounding this 'pandemic" is ridiculous. It's inconceivable to me that so many Americans buy what the media and government "officials" are peddling. Too many people are willing to go along with the blatant infringement and trampling of their rights.
* 655,000 people die of heart disease every year in this country- where are the unconstitutional actions to address this crisis?
* 69,000 people die of diabetes in the US every year- why aren't grocery stores closed down as a response to this?
* 36,000 Americans die of the flu every year- why haven't schools been closed to combat this?
I could go on and on- you're right, we don't need self appointed dictators to tell us what to do- THEY HAVE NO AUTHORITY!

Re: Fall Hershey
You're missing the point....the government didn't cancel Hershey. The folks who put it on made the decision. In a similar manner, the folks who put on the world's largest gathering of aviation enthusiasts at Oshkosh (attracting 750,000 people and 8000 aircraft) decided to cancel as well. They made their decisions based upon the risk to the people who would attend (and the communities they would return to) and although disappointed, I applaud them for it. It verges on criminal behavior to assume that you can just carry on business as usual because you don't like the restrictions.
Our current death toll has passed 100,000 and there is no reason to think we've seen the end of it. The protective measures that most people have been taking have helped slow the disease but a lot of people are still going to die. As others have posted, one infected person can infect many, many others...especially if they show no regard for procedures designed to slow the spread. The virus is no hoax, democrat plot, liberal media ploy, etc. It's real, it's here, we have to deal with it.

Re: Fall Hershey
Bill, your decisions and actions don’t just affect you. They affect everyone you come in contact with. If it were otherwise I would agree with your viewpoint. When I go out I take precautions to protect myself, my friends and the strangers I encounter. It’s what responsible people do.

Re: Fall Hershey
This whole thing makes me curious:
I live remotely and go to town only every 10-12 days.
We have no family here and have visitors maybe once a year and have had none in 6 months.
My county is bigger than Rhode Island and we have had 2 cases of virus.
I would NOT go to town if I felt ill at all.
I wear gloves to handle goods at the store and remove them before getting back into my truck
mail sits in the mailbox minimum of 1 day before being retrieved
I do not wear a mask, so, am I being irresponsible?

Re: Fall Hershey
Scott, under the circumstances I think your actions are responsible. Your area is at much lower risk than most other parts of the country. I live in a rural, farming county in Michigan that happens to be the largest in land area of the state's lower peninsula. We've had 41 cases and 5 deaths. The next county south of us has had 448 cases and 41 deaths. Obviously we have a bigger problem than you do. We also have 45 miles of shoreline on Lake Huron which attracts people from all over the state so I expect our statistics to rise as the good weather progresses and tourists and seasonal residents visit the area possibly bringing the virus with them.
I believe in common sense precautions and respect for the rights and safety of others. I do not believe that following the guidelines from my state infringe on my rights nor that they are an attempt by the government to extend their control into areas they don't belong. These are extraordinary times and extraordinary actions will be required to get us thru them.

VIRTUAL HERSHEY ON LINE
How about a Virtual Hershey on line where every thing for sale is put on line with a set up similar to e-bay with boxes for each seller and picture or list of what he has for sale and when You click the box. Full information and all the pictures pop up. could be set up with search So You could search by year.model.part description. or just troll the listings. could have a silent auction function set up as well where high offer at the end wins the item. I am sure Jeff Head Assistance to the Grand Poo Bah and His Elves could set it up. Piece of Cake! Would be fun. Bill, FJ and other transporter's could arrange to pick up and drop off items too large for normal shipping on their regular routes criss crossing the country.
Trying to think outside the box. MAYBE TOO FAR ?

Re: Fall Hershey
Right, because the restrictions put in place by our government made it impossible to operate the event. There is no provision for returning to normal-normal here. Even under the Red - Yellow - Green system they have implemented, where people are making the assumption that Green is normal, it is not.
Something that people who don't live here do not understand is that Green still comes with a range of onerous restrictions, including limiting public gatherings to less than 250 people and occupancy limits in restaurants. There is no stated phase after green to return to normal-normal, there is only this bastardized "new normal". There is no blue or purple or anything else. So, even if the club did have a crystal ball and knew that Dauphin County would be Green by then, it is still not possible to have the event.

Re: Fall Hershey
It is more than likely that the decision by the event organizers to cancel was based on the possibility of numerous lawsuits that might follow by the heirs of the people who attended and died. Wouldn't matter what the rules are/were, win or loose, the litigation cost would be expensive and even more with a sympathetic jury. Doubt if their insurance company covered - "attendees die from virus". Don't forget the possibility of a second wave - more likely since the protestors aren't following social distancing and shouting in crowds of people.Walter Higgins wrote: ↑Sun May 31, 2020 10:39 pmRight, because the restrictions put in place by our government made it impossible to operate the event. To quote Hershey AACA executive director Steve Moskowitz. “Liability was not a deciding factor. Liability is an issue for every business and you just do all you can to mitigate any exposure. "

What I said is not speculation. I live here. With the 250 person limit in place you can no more have Hershey than they can hold any more Trump rallies at the Giant Center that is in the middle of the very event site we are discussing.

What none of you have mentioned is Covid-20. Think THAT ain't coming? You gotta decide what you're a gonna do. Stand up for what so many have died for or roll over? Based on most of the replies I see here, that's gonna be roll over.

Re: Fall Hershey
Was it science that told us that this wasn't transmittable from human to human or was it science that told us it was? Was it science that told us wearing a mask did no good, or was it science that told us it would? Was it science that told us you could get this from a surface, or was it science that told us you can't. Was it science that told us you could after all? What about the death toll they were predicting two months ago for the following 1-2 week period? Here we are at two months instead of two weeks and we haven't come anywhere near the lower number projected, much less the upper one. The only thing these "Scientist" have proven is that they don't know their anus from a mine shaft. Of course, that hasn't kept them from spreading fear at 1000 times the rate of the virus or collecting tons of taxpayer dollars for studying up on this thing. Wish I had a job where I didn't have to produce anything and could make all kinds of wild projections and no repercussions for missing every one of them by a mile. Any of you (And it appears to be a lot of you) who are scared of this thing need to barricade yourself indoors and wait it out. It is your right to do so. I, on the other hand, am done with it. I will go where I want......maskless. There's no way I can get you sick by doing so, if you stay in your house. The burden of protection needs to be on those who feel they need to be protected, not on the backs of working people who are loosing everything to protect a few.

Re: Fall Hershey
Hal, I understand your frustration, but before you blame the scientists for not having all the answers, remember that this is a NEW virus. We're still learning how it spreads and what it does to the human body. Predictions are made on the best available evidence, but that evidence can and will change as new information becomes available. What we do know is that it is more contagious than the flu, deadlier than the flu and that we're only beginning to develop good strategies to deal with it.
I don't know if I mentioned it but I have some knowledge of how these things work, inasmuch as I have a Master's Degree in Biology. 50 years ago I studied prior pandemics and the potential for new ones. I'm surprised I've lived this long and not experienced a bad one before now. Human history has seen many pandemics and millions of deaths... just because we live in modern times we are not immune. You are correct that we are likely to experience other potential pandemics in the future. Dismantling the watchdogs and researchers that should be in place to identify and protect us from potential pandemics was not a good move and we are paying for it now. If we learn something from this experience perhaps we can avoid a repeat in the future.

Re: Fall Hershey
I generally find that people's basic support for the "stay at home" order is tied to their having a pension and that the level of said support is directly proportional to the size of that pension.
It was just like when private health insurance was nuked several years back. The biggest cheerleaders that I knew were under no threat of being subject to the new deal because they already had their own sweetheart deal though work or what have you. No matter that the rest of us paying our own way 100% and minding our own business had our worlds turned upside-down. Everybody else that is already being taken care of also always seems to know what is best for everybody else.

If you think this whole thing ain't political then explain to me why a week ago they were vilifying people and talking about jailing them for gathering in groups of more than 10, but now we have governors commending people for gathering by the thousands.

Shoot, up here the attorney general even imposed a $33,000 fine on wrong doers of covid gatherings. The state could've made some serious cash lately...
Sad and embarrassing.
