Ring and Pinion set #1

Post by tselliott » Fri Nov 20, 2020 2:01 am

Set #1, Ford gears.
Pinion gear is as perfect as one would hope to find. Bore and keyway look great, no chipped teeth or pitting. Ring gear has no pitting or chipped teeth although 5 of the teeth show some wear across the tops.
I tried to show the best I could in the pictures.
I don’t know for sure if they were actually a set that were run together. I got these in a pile of parts I bought and they were not wired together. They have been bead blasted to remove light surface rust.
$175 plus shipping.

I can not find the previous post on the subject, but I did save a copy of the pictures that were included in the original post. This was from the May, 1923 Ford Service Bulletin, published by the Ford Motor Company of Canada. Does the ring gear have the same "punch" mark as the pinion gear does?

I found the original post, here is the link:

I disagree Mark - it clearly states in the above posted Service Bulletin excerpt - you are referring the a Brinell test.

A punch mark like that is probably not from a hardness test. Generally if a part like that is hardness tested, then only a sample (one part or a few parts) from each batch of heat treating gets tested, not every part.

The mark that a diamond penetrator makes for a hardness test on a gear or shaft would look sort of like a “pin-prick”.

The ring gear has that same indent that the pinion gear has

The diamond penetrator that makes the "pin-prick" mark is for Rockwell hardness tests. The Brinell test uses a ball indentor and leaves a mark as shown on the backside of the pinion, in the first set of photos.
