FS... 1925 Coupe that's been in my family for 73 years

Post by James_Lyons-WV » Mon Apr 26, 2021 4:41 pm

Up for sale is an early 1925 Model T Ford Coupe, which was built in November of 1924. This car has been in my family now for 73 years. My Grandfather, (Fred Long) who was a charter member of the Nation’s Capital Region MTFCI, purchased this car sometime in 1948 while working his beat as a Washington DC policeman. He often saw the car being driven as daily transportation and one day he stopped the owner and made an offer on the car. He paid $50 for it.
Sometime between 1948 and 1950, my grandfather restored the car. Clearly the standards of the day were different than now, but the car still wears its 71+ year old paint. The gray wool interior is a replacement that my grandmother sewed from scratch when it was restored. It has held up well and is far more rugged than the replacements today. It looks remarkably like the gray Ford cloth interior, but not exact.
Since its purchase in 48, the coupe has had a pretty interesting history with us. It was used in the early 1950’s during opening day celebrations when the Chesapeake Bay bridge was opened. It was also used in the 1955 movie, “Court-martial of Billy Mitchell” starring Gary Cooper and Elizabeth Montgomery. In 1972, the old Ford got submerged in 4 feet of water when Hurricane Agnes came up through Maryland and the flood breached the dykes. The water line is faintly visible on the door panels. The car was quickly dried out, cleaned and back in service after the flood with no lingering damage other than the door panel stains.
From 1950 until 1983, the car saw constant use touring the states surrounding Washington DC with the AACA and other clubs. In 83 it was parked until I took possession of it in 2004. Under my care, it hasn’t been driven more than 200 miles because as a two-seater, it was too small for a family. I have a 1915 Touring car that we use. Plus, I’ve migrated toward Brass cars more than anything else, so the old Coupe just doesn’t get used much. It has been maintained and driven on occasion just for exercise, but mostly it just sits. So it’s time to pass it along.
About the car.
The car still has its original drive-line that it had when my grandfather bought it in 48. It’s a good runner and will be great for touring. The engine has never been fully rebuilt on today’s standards and still sports its standard bore and cast-iron pistons. It has had the head shaved, rings on a couple of occasions and several valves and two rods replaced in the 73 years we’ve had it. It’s also had two valve jobs that I know of whereby all eight seats were lapped. I also replaced the lifters with adjustable’s recently. The block has several water-jacket cracks that were there as far back as 48. They’ve been repaired with epoxy over the years and never given us any problems. I ground them out and filled them with JB weld this year so they are good for another 20 years. Not to worry, I do have a spare 1925 block that goes with the car that can be put into service at the new owner’s leisure. I also have the original engine pans to go with the car. The one thing that does not work right now is the starter. But it starts easy by the hand-crank so I haven’t fussed with it. I also have a spare one of those to go along with the new owner too. The car has a new set of “old version” Scandinavia bands in it with zero miles. The oil was just changed too.
About 7 years ago, I put a brand new set of tires and tubes on the car from Universal. They have probably 20 miles on them and are not cracking or checking that I can see. The differential has not been opened up that I know of. But I’ve experienced no issues in my short excursions that would indicate the thrust washers are babbit or excessively worn. Nevertheless, it is something to consider. I did put NOS Hyatt bearing sleeves in it several years back and back before I got it, my uncle put spiral springs around the axles and neoprene seals in it to prevent leaking.
The body has all of its original sheet metal and the wood is original too. I put a new top on it back in 2004, which kind of was a fail, but It looks great and does not leak. The paint is very old as I have said and two of the wheels are peeling/flaking. The paint is somewhat dull, with lots of chips and scratches, but in one of the photo’s I tried to capture an area of the hood that I waxed to show that it has some shine left to it. From 10 feet away, it looks great – just like a Model T should. It just needs some detailing. The car comes with a replacement hood that my grandfather bought years ago because the original is cracking. As a bonus, you get a layer of river mud on the new/old hood, left behind from the flood in 72.
Overall, this is a great car that with a little bit of tinkering and maintenance, you can have it ready to tour. It is just time for me to pass it along to someone who will enjoy it and maybe even restore it. My price, including the spare block, starter, and a handful of other engine miscellaneous parts is $8,000. It has a clear Maryland title in my Uncle’s name and ownership will be transferred with this title. Shipping arrangements are up to you. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

The car is no longer for sale through the forum directly. Since there was no interest, it has been listed on Ebay. Thanks MTFCA.

Lots of interest, and a very nice car, but unfortunately just not enough time to give someone here a chance to see it before you pulled it, or to figure out if they can get the $$ together for the car and shipping over the weekend...

Well, it's still below his asking price...no reason not to bid on it now that everyone has thought about it...

James
I don't blame you a bit in advertising this car to a wider audience than is on the Forum. It was sporting of you to have done it and if anyone here was remotely interested in it, it would have sold very quickly, as Hank alluded. Best of luck with the sale.

 Better check all that cash with a UV light. Funny money is floating around. But they don't laugh at the bank.

25 Coupe. T bay terms.
Deposit of $500 is required within 24 hours of your winning bid. The remainder is due when you pick the car up IN CASH. I WILL NOT take any other form of payment. It has a clear Maryland title in my Uncle’s name and ownership will be transferred with this title and a bill of sale. I will not go to DMV and have it re-titled. That place is a zoo. Shipping arrangements are up to you. Please note, that my driveway can only handle a pickup truck and car trailer. If you are having a big car carrier come fetch it, I will need to know so I can be in contact with the driver. I live on a mountain so you can’t get a semi up my driveway. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I communicate quickly and clearly.

The car to the left (in the front end photo) is a very nice 1913 Ford Touring and the car to the right is a 1906 Maxwell, Model S - also known as the "Gentlemen's Speedster". There are only three known Model S cars in existence, but this is the only one that is confirmed - having "S" as the suffix in the serial number. I also know the history of the Maxwell going back to 1925.

Ebay is a great place to sell a vehicle. I've sold more than 20 vehicles on the site over the years and had excellent results. And yes, I do swipe the bills with a marker before handing over the title.

SALE DIDN'T GO THROUGH

Post by Novice » Wed May 19, 2021 5:09 pm

BACK ON E-BAY ? current bid $5000. Now has a buy it now price of $8000. 4 days to go. second time around. 2018 views here.

"TERMS:

Sorry to sound harsh, but flaky bidders make this necessary. This is an AUCTION. Do your research and ask your questions FIRST. I will reply back very quickly. DO NOT pull the "buy it now" trigger, or otherwise win this auction and then start asking me questions to try and figure out if it will fit in your garage.... if you can drive it home at 75mph on the Interstate... or any other such nonsense after the fact. If you win this auction, it is now YOURS. So don't bid unless you know what you are buying and have your details sorted out. Also, don't send me a message after the auction with your phone number asking me to call you. That's just rude. We can communicate just fine through ebay messenger like we are supposed to so there is a clear record of the transaction. This is for your benefit and mine. PAYMENT: You have a few options here. You can send me a $500 deposit via paypal immediately at the close of the auction and pay the remainder in cash when you pick up the car, SO LONG as your pickup will be WITHIN 2 weeks of the close of the auction. If you need more time to fetch the car, that is no problem... the car can sit here in my shop for up to 30 days to give you some time. But I will need full payment via bank wire within two-weeks of the auction close. At the close of the auction, I will send you my paypal address through ebay messenger (for some reason, Ebay doesn't provide a link to send just the deposit). Please message me IMMEDIATELY at the close of the auction and TELL ME YOUR PLANS FOR PICKUP AND PAYMENT. I will reply back right away and we will get things rolling."

On subject of fake money. Wife had to make deposit for company she use to work for. One day she took a fake 100 in. G man showed up and took info, then came to the company for more info. He told her the pens are a joke, just something to make you feel good. He said only way for sure is feel the coat of the guy in picture on the Bill.
If you look close at the coat it is made up of little dots, you can feel them with you fingernails. Run your nail on it like you are trying to scratch it off. Try it, it works. He said the fakers can not make that. Dan
