I'll be listening to All Things Considered this afternoon. They always have one special story for April 1, but those who don't listen carefully may take it for real. One year it was about how Thomas Edison invented Hello. My favorite was a report on the latest teenage fad, having your navel surgically removed. Everybody interviewed was so utterly clueless that it seemed totally real. :D

In these days of enlightenment many things we did for fun or amusement are no longer tolerated. People go to jail or are banned from society for doing simple stunts we used to pull.
I'm sure we are better off for it.

As long as someone isn't malicious or destructive, a good prank shouldn't hurt anyone.

My daughters devised a strategic prank on their mom.... A simple rubber band wrapped around the dish sprayer and handle at the kitchen sink got their mom when she was cleaning up breakfast. All in fun!

I got some co-workers when telling them that the Jets had reneged on the Brett Favre trade, so the Packers then traded him to Chicago.
"Who, or what did we get in return?"
 "We get back Lake Geneva and the second lane of the Inter-State!" :D
"Let's Figgur it owt!" Just fix it (right), and make it work.....
Aah-OO-Gah! (and), "Happy T-ing!"

My dad, a 26 Fordor owner, was a great fan of April's fools day pranks. My all time favorite was old car related. Early one Saturday morning he called upstairs to tell me a family friend and multiple old car owner had arrived, driving his 1929 ROLLS ROYCE!!!! A completely believable story.
I think I broke the sound barrier to see the gem in our empty driveway., my dad nearly bursting with laughter. I later got dad back when I showed up in the driveway with a real '29 Rolls Royce, a feat that took some doing!
Thanks for the memory.

While I once was a big fan of April fool's day, I am no longer. I haven't spent much time thinking about why, but this year set me to wonderin'. In the past, what I liked about this day was that people would make up outlandish stories to see if they would be just plausible enough to be believed by some folks. Unfortunately, this is no longer restricted to just one day a year. All sorts of people are making up outlandish stories every day, many not very plausible, not as a joke, but as a method of influencing friends, enemies, the population at large, and the world around us.

Since it takes so much effort to apply the critical thought process and what was once considered common sense to everything we hear today, there is not as much fun for me in the traditional April fool's day shenanigans. To me, it is more fun to share knowledge and stories in a place where I don't have to spend as much time evaluating what I am hearing. Usually, this group is one of those places. Here, I know up front that what I am reading is often just an opinion and so I don't get too worked up about the opinions that differ from mine. Beyond the opinions, this place is a wealth of knowledge about our hobby.

So now, a "prank story" rarely brings me a smile or a laugh, but most often, just a sigh of resignation. Oh well, life goes on...

Keep crankin',
Eric

We all know someone who does not have a special day. They are with us all year around. I will not list the one I have in mind.

Not an April Fool's prank, but car related, and doubtless as good a harmless practical joke as I ever heard about:

Several years back, a "survivor" of Packard Motor Car Co.'s styling section wrote about a prank he and the fellows he worked with played on a colleague. This took place in the early 1950s: Seems one fellow with a penchant for "one-upsmanship" had just purchased a brand-new, small, English sports car (I don't recall the make or model) and then began haranguing his work-mates about the glories of his new machine, and especially about the phenomenal (for those times) gas mileage he was getting. When "the fellers" at last got totally fed up with his bragging, they conceived of sneaking out to the parking lot during the work-day to add some gasoline to the braggart's tank. Of course, this further improved his mileage, and incrementally, they increased its performance to nearly unbelievable proportions. Of course the braggart couldn't contain his enthusiasm, almost daily reporting his incredible results, and teasing his pals mercilessly about the "gas-hogs" they were driving. Finally there came a time to reverse the process ! The tricksters began by adding less gasoline to the braggart's tank; then they began removing gasoline bit by bit until they reckoned he would have to be getting truly miserable gas mileage. As his gas mileage began to wane, the braggart ceased to mention it. He spoke less and less about his new car. After a while, the pranksters started to ask him about the gas mileage he was getting. It became pretty obvious he would much rather avoid the subject entirely. In time they left off meddling with his gas tank, the bragging ended, and if I recall correctly, the story told that the victim of the prank never did find out what they had done to him.

Too funny, eh Dave ? Ten years later on TV. Wouldn't it be fun to know who pulled this first, and when ? Did the gag get passed around, or was it an "original invention" a few times ? I'll bet it got a lot of play after Gomer showed 'em !

I have posted several April Fool jokes on here over the years. 90% of the fun was registering under another name so no one knew who it was. A clever play on words with the name made it even better. Can't do that anymore per the rules.
