Unless you are doing a points car, use pop rivets. You would almost need to take the tank out to set the ones on top, that are behind/above it. Think 1 inch would be too long anyway unless you are going to cut them back after pushing through. They would only need to go through and roll over like band rivets with tangs bent over on the outside and head on the inside.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas! :shock:

!/2" is long enough, but pop rivets are the go. Even on earlier steel firewall cars the two lower ones on each side I substitute with pop rivets, as you can't get to the back of them. On a show car you could solder the holes on pop rivets.
