Homecoming in Richmond IN - June 6-7-8

Post by SusanYaeger » Tue Jun 04, 2019 7:18 pm

Homecoming is almost here and we’re so glad to report that construction in the Swap Meet area is complete and everything is a go! Thanks go to the City of Richmond for their hard work and the improvements made here for the Museum.

There will not be a Museum benefit auction this year, however, the Museum will have a vendor tent and all sales proceeds will go toward the Museum fund.

If you are coming to Homecoming, and we hope a lot of you are, please bring an item (or more!) to donate to the Museum cause. Also, come ready to buy, but no bargains at this tent! We already have received word that Russ Potter is donating a carburetor, Birdhaven will be providing a donation, and we look forward to everyone’s generosity in donating and buying!

We do have some excess items that will be for sale, including the two valve grinders pictured below. Both need work. If you can’t come to Homecoming but would like to make an offer on the grinders, or Russ Potter’s carburetor, please send an email with your $ offer to: admin@mtfca.com

Remember there are two nice driving tours on Thursday and Friday – no registration or fee required. Just arrive at the Museum Thursday by 10:30am, ready to tour, or Friday by 8:30am.

On Saturday, June 8 Homecoming day, in addition to the Swap Meet, Car Show, Seminars and Model T Games, we will also be presenting Seamus Hnat with the Ben Yumori Award trophy, which we hope will include some “stories from the road” by Seamus and possibly Dean Yoder and Steve Jelf!

For more details and Homecoming schedule visit: [http://www.modeltfordclubofamerica.com/homecoming/]

We hope to see you in Richmond!

I met a Farm tractor on that road. We both had to have wheels in the ditch to pass 😝

Okay Dallas..here's some pics from today's stops. Elevator factory first, lunch stop at a country club, underground railroad museum after lunch. Had great Amish Ice cream at end of tour. No pic of that...too busy eating! My Speedo drive crapped out on me making an awful noise so I pulled over alongside a back country road on the way back to the hotel and disconnected it. Took a little cruise around the neighborhood after fueling up and ran into (not literally) my ol buddy Seamus so we stopped and caught up on news for a bit. Sorry you couldn't make it. Great weather for our tours. Thanks to Kerry, Kim, Susan and all other organizers of whom I am missing here!

Now to try and post pics. Last time they wouldn't insert. Ill split them up as I heard you can only post so many at one time.

Well I see the pics posted "backwards" in the order in which we toured but at least they are there! Here's some more. Great day!Almost forgot the paper factory. The pic of the U. Railroad house with the big hole in the floor is the source for their house water..a sort of natural spring constantly feeding this open well. Clearest water you've ever seen.
A very worthwhile stop explaining the harsh lives of slaves seeking freedom.

Two pics of some of the 19 or so cars in attendance. Plus two ladies looking over my '13 while I was at breakfast this morning. They combed that car over for at least 5 minutes...seemed like they really knew what they were looking at with their actions.

I'm so envious of those of you able to take your cars to Richmond. Next week I hope to get the wheels back on mine and turn it around so I can drop the engine back in.... Maybe I'll bring it down next year.

I am going to come down for the Saturday events - I'll be driving my Jeep Renegade and hauling my amigo scooter on a rack in the trailer hitch. I'm coming down Friday and staying in a nearby motel so I can be there bright and early on Saturday. I've missed a lot T-wise because of my busted leg so I'm really looking forward to this. I just hope the weather cooperates.

We made it here a little late for the Thursday tour so just hung out at the museum and hit the Fire House for lunch then back to the campground after I removed the fan from the 09 that had locked up because someone forgot to check it. :? While I was working on the fan shaft and talking to some campers I saw Seamus and Jerod I think he said his name is pull in. Man he can talks a lot! LOL. After fixing my fan problem we headed back to town for food again and a test run and even lit the lights just to see if they stay lit and so people can see us if it gets dark. I hope to meet up with the rest of the cars in the morning. Driving around town was like a parade of one in that old car and it should be on about 100 facebook pages by now or where ever people post this stuff. Cameras are everywhere! Maybe I should get mine out but its hard to drive with it. Someone will have pictures I hope.

Hi Bob l was wondering what campground you are at? Is it closer to Richmond than whitewater state park which is where we were planning to go to tomorrow. We have never been to Richmond before. Thank you

So far its been a spectacular day and a great tour. Excellent back country roads. Fantastic stop at the Carillon Historical Park including the Wright Brothers national museum. Fantastic place. Kind of like Greenfield Village.
Having German food for lunch at the restaurant on the grounds. Heres a few pics.

My first homecoming and I had a great time! Even though I had to come solo, I was not alone. Several people figured it was me on my "yard sale amigo" and stopped to introduce themselves. It was great to put faces to people I had met on the forum. My wallet is a little lighter but I came away with some good ideas and an overall wonderful experience. Thanks to the MTFCA and the volunteers that made it happen.

Great time at the homecoming! First time bringing our 26! Got to meet Brent “the coil man”, Steve, and saw Dean’s famous car (but not him). I found a few parts and saw some nice cars. Only complaint is that it was too close to Camping World which caused us to buy a new RV! Back to Richmond later this month to pick it up! Thanks to the organizers for a fun day!!

This is the first time I am able to get back to post here since we are now at home. We had a great time driving all around Richmond and getting to meet some old friends from the forum and a few new ones. This year we brought the new car which was running real good and made it to Dayton without issue so the drive back to Richmond looked like another easy run till we got just about 1/2 block from the Lowes on 40 at Eaton Pike near Richmond where the car suddenly lost power and made some strange and nasty sounds so I started looking for a place to pull off and shut it down and coasted into an opening to a gravel lot. Several people stopped to help and after checking things over we checked the oil and the top petcock had vibrated open some time along the last 50 miles because of a weak spring so no oil in that one so I checked the lower and oil did run out so at least it had some in it. I had 3 quarts under the seat and was able to dump in all 3 and still nothing dripped so someone passed me another bottle and after about half a quart the oil started to run out so I closed it and spun the engine over a few times to see if we could hear or feel anything. A quick start up produced a knock that said the tour was over for me and my wife. Since this tour had no vulture wagon it was up to anyone willing to help bail us out. A big thank you goes to Tim Wren who stepped up and offered to take me back to the campground where our trailer was parked. The ride was nice in spite of the reason and Tim is a real asset to the club in many ways but he went above and beyond to help as did many others and I owe them all a big thank you as well. Now the work begins and we will see what damage is done. The up side of this is that the engine had been replaced with a 16 block at some time in the past so this wont be as bad as it could have been if it had been the open valve 1909 engine it started life with.
Give an old car guy a barn and he won't throw anything away.

Bob, thanks for your kind remarks but I only did what anybody else would do too. But thank you. It feels good to help someone who needs a helping hand, and I know you've done the same thing in the past. I only feel so bad for your bad luck and hope the damage is only minor like a rod bearing and not one of the mains. Good luck my friend.

George, the Jelfies will show up soon. He should be home today and I'm sure by tonite he'll be posting. I saw him taking lots of pics so I didn't take as many pics on sat. as I did on the tour so as not to duplicate so much. But here is one of me and a lady and her 2 kids that I took for a ride around town. The little girl was the cashier at the hamburger booth! They all loved the ride. Very nice people.

Usually I post pictures when I'm traveling, but this time McDonald's free wi-fi was worth what I paid for it. It kept giving me error messages when I tried to open the forum. So here I am back at the farm and able to post. I'll do the Friday pictures now and the Saturday shots later. I don't have a lot of gripes about the new forum format, but the limit of five pictures to a post is one feature I could do without.

Among the early arrivals were Dean Yoder's 1924 traveling rig and a later model death trap.

IMG_3002 copy.JPG
Dean's outfit always draws attention, especially when people see all the stickers and learn that the car has driven to all those places.

IMG_3005 copy.JPG
Elizabeth Estep (second from left) and Mike Francis (back to camera) were on hand to show their work on a 1923 touring. Mike makes the tops and upholstery and Elizabeth installs them.

I got these. Probably not original, maybe even home made. But they're not stainless, so maybe I can get paint to stay on them.

Nice group of pics Steve! Thanks for the hard work. 5 pics at a time does take time!It was a great 3 days. Hope they do another tour next year. Thanks again to all the fine folks putting on the tours and the Homecoming on Saturday. Richmond is clearly a fantastic asset and supporter of this fine museum and its activities.

I agree with what Tim Wrenn said above - This was an outstanding Homecoming event. The tours on Thursday and Friday were great. The Swap Meet had lots of T and TT parts. I found some needed parts and some bargains also. The weather was great too.

Many thanks to everyone who helped put this on, including Susan Yaeger, Jerry and Kim Kramer, Tony Wiltshire, and so many others (you know who you are). And also thanks to Steve Jelf and others for posting pictures.

Can't wait for the 2020 Homecoming!

Tonight my wife and I tore into the 09 to see what the damage looks like. As expected the #1 rod was toast but the others were still tight and so far it looks like the crank is good. When the oil got low it caused the babbit to get hot and melt and crumble but the cap held up and only the rod had lost most but not all babbit and no blue or any other color to the crank. I was running around 30 MPH when this let go and shut it down within seconds when the sound started and coasted to a stop so maybe that saved the engine. Next I need to pull the head to remove the piston and inspect the cyl. walls for damage but looking up from below I don't see anything and hope all is well. It will take time to fix because its hard to find time to work on it but we should have this running again soon if no other problems turn up.
Give an old car guy a barn and he won't throw anything away.
