Wanted: Muncie transmission u-joint & coupler

Post by ron_mckenzie » Sat Jun 15, 2019 6:33 pm

Looking for a good u-joint and coupler for an existing Muncie transmission. This u-joint and coupler is special to the Muncie. Any leads or information will be appreciated. If you have a complete Muncie transmission for sale, I'd consider that also.
Please email. Thanks! Ron

Here is a great solution to the coupler issue. Just cut off the yoke end with an abrasive saw.

Ron, The Muncie U/joints are pretty hard to come by and are usually worn out. Some time ago I purchased one with a homemade coupler to replace the U/joint. It as cured but seemed to work. I'm getting ready to replace that trans with a rebuilt one and this is what I came up with for the coupler in the front were the U/joint goes. I found a 13/16 X 3/4 deep budd wheel socket. Cut it off, milled a piece of 7/8 cold rolled square to fit in the 13/16.
It will be cut to match the needed length of the U/joint. After some thought I have considered that a short socket can be used & the 7/8 cut to fit in the 3/4 square. These sockets should hold up good most of them will handle 700 ft.lbs. of torque. The rear coupler that Layden mentioned looks like this when cut off. These sockets can still be found new but check the depth of the square hole to make sure there is enough to get a good purchase on the male square.

Nice Job Craig, been up that creek to many times, late nights on the mill and lathe club!

All the Best,

Hank
