Transmission work

Post by RGould1910 » Thu Feb 19, 2026 1:36 pm

Transitioning to a transmission. Did I really say that?
It's been a few years since I did transmission work. Is the consensus on triple gear bushing clearance still .005"?
Last time around I recall pin bluing at .003" but that could have been due to other causes.

That's my preference. .0045-.005"
But there are other aspects of the bushing lubrication to be optimized since this is a weak link.
After machining the flange clearance, cut a healthy chamfer, .090-.100".
With an 1/8" die grinder bit, cut a lead from the chamfer into the 2 oil groves.
I have transitioned to the Ford method of pin sizing the bushing from lathe boring. Not a fan of hand reaming.

Use of a suitable, light-bodied engine oil will help assure that the triple gear bushings get adequate lubrication, especially in new installations. I'd also want to limit the speed, load, and time spent in low or reverse until the parts had some run-time.

Consider burnishing with stainless steel burnishing balls. It gives a hardened mirror like finish to the bushings and presses them into the bearings.
