APCO Cap....Springs Needed or Not?

Post by RustyFords » Tue Jul 30, 2019 1:01 pm

I'm about to install a cleaned up vintage APCO radius rod cap, with a new inner spring and cup, on my car.

Does the APCO unit need the two mounting springs like a stock cap does?

I have had mine mounted for many miles and years with the normal studs and springs. The internal spring is to take up wear in the ball. I do not recall seeing an ad that showed it mounted any different then the stock ball cap.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Thanks for the replies.

I can't seem to locate any vintage ads that show the thing mounted.

Found an ad for the APCO Radius Rod Anti Rattlers and a few other of their products. I enlarged the Radius Rod text. In reading it is seems to indicate that the springs holding the original cap in place were a cause of wear when backing up .... and their design eliminated them.

Thanks Frank.

That seems to pretty conclusively show that the springs are not to be used.

Yes it sure does, thanks for finding the ad. Murray's book is mum on the subject giving very little info. For now mine is staying the way it is. ;)

I can certainly understand leaving the springs off, but do NOT skip the step of wiring the bolts in place. To do so, you'll need bolts with wire holes drilled through the heads. Do NOT substitute split lock washers in place of the wire.
