Enclosed Trailer Winch Questions
Just down sized my enclosed trailer from 32 ft to new 24 ft. I haul model Ts 26pu, 27 roadster and 30 model A coupe. So nothing heavy but trying to outfit this trailer without breaking the bank. Still working on retirement. Any issues with the HF badland and what size winch has any else had good service from? Last question, do i needed to put a steel plate under the trailer with such light vehicles? I have a place i can have one cut if i need it. Thanks in advance.

Re: Enclosed Trailer Winch Questions
A good winch would be the 3500 or better, the 5000. That trip up the ramp can be a problem for the lower rated winches. My trailer company put in a very small winch which I use, but just a T nearly peaks it out. It will be replaced with above, when it dies.
I needed to retrieve my Austin Healey from Fl and knew this toy would not be up to the task, so I installed a fold-down tie-down eye in the middle of the floor and used the winch with a snatch block rated for 10,000# and it pulled the car in with no sweat.
Note: any radio-control switch that comes with the winch will eventually fail. The reciever and the transmitter can both be bought for rediculously low $$ and can be installed in the system by simply removing the cover on the receiver and swapping out parts. This info will save you from re-buying the complete unit and going through the trouble of rerouting cables...this is an example of what you'd buy to repair any unit: https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Remote- ... way&sr=8-5

Re: Enclosed Trailer Winch Questions
Tim,
+1 on the HF 5000lb. I picked up the winch, mounting plate, hitch adapter, AND the accessory remote, ALL for 25% off. You won't need all that but so far it all looks and works as it should. I have a 2500 lb. HF winch and it's really too small. It'll do the job but it sure isn't happy. So, we decided to upgrade.
Good Luck,
Terry

Badland Winch - Harbor Freight
All is use every day is Badland Winches from Harbot Freight with plug in wireless remote control.
I use the 12K because it has a slower speed and a drum tensioner that helps keep the cable tight to minimize snags.
I use the optional mounting plate - I mount the plate
on piece of wood to allow the roller fairlead to clear the trailer floor.
I load & unload all vehicles with an electric winch.

3/4 inch plywood floor ?
If you have a 3/4 inch plywood floor - if you use a minimum two inch thick dimensional wood piece on top of the floor - if you install a winch mounting plate on top of that - then that should suffice.

Re: Enclosed Trailer Winch Questions
Maybe a trivial question, is it possible installed a remote on a regular winches who do not have any set-up for receiver?

Re: Enclosed Trailer Winch Questions
I have the Badland 5000 winch mounted in my trailer. Like Scott says anything smaller will groan a little at the peak of the pull. My 5000 growls a little but seems to be up to the job so far. Wish it had the cable tensioner like the heavier units have but you can overcome that situation with a glove and steady hand tension when reeling in loose cable. Mike

Re: Enclosed Trailer Winch Questions
Yes. I did mine using a HF Badland remote.
Use your winch control cable and cut it 2-3” from the plug. Then splice it back together with a plug so it can still be used when you want to.
Then take the HF remote and again put a control side plug on it. That way you can plug in the remote or the wired controller.
I mounted the control box for the remote to the top of my X9 superwinch. Works great being able to stand anywhere when winching.
If my short term memory gets any shorter, I won’t even have thought about what I’m going to forget.
