You may want to replace your bicycle speedometer with the real thing. They had them you know. As far as the shackle goes, it wouldn't be one of those new cast ones would it? That is why I'd never buy one of those.

Yes, and I have one also. I intend to put it on the car when I remember where I put it.
Yesterday I used the obsolete Garmin I was given at OCF. It works great as a speedometer/odometer.

No, it was an original. The road was otherwise smooth, so I was moving right along, and the dips at both ends of that bridge gave it a tremendous jolt. I'm pretty sure that's what broke it. I'm glad my car has the wrong wishbone, or the wreckage might have been worse.

...was the broken shackle one of these?
The short answer is, I don't know. It may have been one of the really bad ones, or one that was less worn, or one that I didn't have to build up at all. Unfortunately I didn't keep track of which ones I used where.

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
I go through literally tons of old car parts every year, and have for almost 5 decades now. I don’t ever recall seeing a broken shackle, ever. Model T or A. I also throw away lots of stuff. That was a bad idea when you did it, and spoke up then. It was an even worse idea for a national club to print the how to article. Back in the day of ford model t, they told their mechanics to destroy stuff beyond use BEFORE it was thrown away.
If you aren’t sure which one it was, it would make sense to me replace the unknown others, so nobody is hurt or killed. Remember, we are simply caretakers of these old cars. Someone else will someday take over, and we need to be sure they are safe. Same goes for smearing JB weld on something, another pet peeve of mine. Rant over.

That brings up another question. Are the reproduction figure eights any good, or should I be looking for good originals instead? I'll be watching for originals, but I wonder how the quality of the new ones is.

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
Steve, Chaffins have been making and selling them for many, many years. Decades ! If they weren’t any good, I’m sure we’d have been talking about injury lawsuits by now. Only a guess but they are either forged as original or cast steel. Perhaps mr Chaffin can answer that, and hope you can share the answer. Great or NOS originals of those have always been easy to find in past years around here, but as our cars get older, great reproductions may soon be the only way to go. It’s also very beneficial to use bronze sleeves, instead of fords bad idea of rolled steel.

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
Yes, I am. It's time to wrap this thing up.
Before starting out in the morning I took some shots of my wounded top.
At this point the upright was completely broken, with the top part sitting on the bottom part.
Along the road west of Moberly. September is the time for goldenrod and sunflowers.
Lots of sunflowers were out in Missouri.
In several places the road became a single lane where bridges were being repaired or replaced.

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
I received the gift of an obsolete Garmin at OCF. I downloaded the manuals and learned how to make it show speedometer/odometer functions. I'll learn some of the other functions later. I intend to make a holder for it, and to repair and improve the bicycle speedometer setup, and install a 1915 speedometer when I find where I put it, so whatever I use will have a couple of backups.
I made an afternoon stop in KC MO to visit some of the cousins, then headed south across the river into downtown. I was happy to find that after following this route last year, seeing it again made me remember most of it so I didn't have to do a lot of map checking.
Stopping for the evening at 135th Street and State Line Road I used the test machine, and thought after our recent BP discussion some folks would be interested to see what Pursuant Health has to say on the subject.
Cruising mostly at 35-40 mph, covering 151 miles in a day is normal, especially when you don't drive after sundown. The maximum speed of 42 mph was down a hill before going up the next one.
Now we come to the reason I didn't post anything Monday. For years my traveling routine has included an evening stop at a McDonalds, where I buy a drink and enjoy it while doing my internet stuff. Occasionally lobby closing time would come before I finished. In those cases they locked the doors and let me out when I finished. But this manager was having none of that. She sent the young counter man to tell me I had to leave. I asked him if I could take a few minutes to finish my work and post it online. He went to ask the manager, then came back and said no, I had to leave now. So I attempted to post the unfinished work. I found that she had cut off the wi-fi so I couldn't post, or even save my work as a draft. That's why there was no Monday post.

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
Last year I stayed in Roeland Park before making the final run toward home. I ran out of daylight and had to stay in Winfield, then drive the final fifteen miles home the next morning. So this time I went on down to 135th Street for a morning start a few miles closer to home. I missed my intended road with a wrong turn in Olathe, but the alternate road was good and didn't cost me much time, if any.
Old US 50 south of Ottawa is another example of a former main highway being a good Model T road with minimal traffic.
Wind farm near Waverly. On this trip I passed a few windmill blades being transported on flatbed trucks. They sure are big.
I stopped at Bud & Karen Redding's place to ask Bud if he might know of a possible top socket source I hadn't thought of. While I was there Bud applied a splint to my broken upright.
Bud's splint: a piece of angle aluminum, three hose clamps, and Gorilla tape. That will hold it until I find a replacement. I already phoned Model T Haven, and Mark said these roadster uprights are mighty scarce. Steve Lang suggested a possible source, but if that doesn't work out I may take the piece back to Bud, who says you can fix anything if you're smart enough. Actually, I think the right repair could make this piece stronger than a new one.
A strong south wind blowing the grass and wildflowers tells me I'm back in Kansas.

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
I love country roads like this. Road 360 in Greenwood County. The number means it's 36 miles north of the county line. Some counties number their roads, some use letters, and some use names, often in alphabetical order.
Uh-oh. It's really washed out. Fortunately the low-pedal detour down into the gully and back up to the road is dry.
My favorite part of the trip home is through the flint hills.
It's a slow road up here, mostly 15-20 mph with a couple of low-pedal parts, but the views are magnificent.
I didn't get out to take a picture of this hill, as I didn't think the parking brakes would hold the car.

This is not in a town. The country church and cemetery are surrounded by farms.
Traveling through the bottom lands you have high-speed graded roads good for 30 mph.
The Shadow knows. Back home in Cowley County, racing the sun to get home before dark.
The two big silos on the Marrs farm mean I'm two miles from home. I pulled into my driveway a couple of minutes after the sun sank behind the west hedge row.

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
Shorty expressed her approval of my return. Meanwhile, the grass continues to grow while I wait for the new starter I had to order for the mower.
The car stayed reasonably clean until I got to Greenwood County.
Her human is back and she got a Model T ride to town, so she's in doggie heaven even on a hot day.
That's my OCF trip for this year. I'm switching back to my daily blog until the next trip.

Steve, I hope you are able to find a new set of top sockets and windshield frames at Hershey this year. Hopefully, they won't be thin and weak from rust on the inside. Getting new sockets will also give you a second chance at fitting the top to the bows.

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
I think it’s time you take the plunge and buy a smartphone. It would make your long distance Model T travels so much easier.
1. You wouldn’t be dependent on bumming a free WiFi signal. You can use the cellular signal for internet.
2. You wouldn’t have to travel with your laptop.
3. You wouldn’t need to transfer pictures from a digital camera to your laptop to post pictures on line.
4. You wouldn’t need a separate GPS unit.
5. You could get rid of the bicycle speedometer that constantly breaks and just use a speedometer app.
6. Oh yeah, it can be used as a phone too!

I love my smart phone, but I haven't figured out how to recharge it off my 1915 magneto.

You need to get a rechargeable battery pack. About the same size as the phone.

Get one of these:

I have an 8000mAh one and I can charge my phone at least 3 times before it needs to be recharged.

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
The data for a "smart" phone can be expensive tho and did anyone ever pay attention when Steve has said he's a little frugal?
Me too. I spend like a madman sometimes but I cheep like a bird.
My best computer is my desktop, my new phone works real good but simply put, it sucks. And then there's the built-in obsolescence.
Thank you Steve! Man, oh man, you do have some beautiful vistas in your part of the country!
So many great photos all along the trip.
Our pupper's are so blame happy to see us when we get home! It's time for me to get another friend to help me with the chippy's, squirrels, maybe snakes and rabbits here but my antique cat would be so pxxxxd so I wait.

All Ed says about a smartphone is true, and I could charge it with the phone charger in my car. But it has a touch screen.

Steve,
I want to thank you for sharing your travels with everyone. This is why I bought a T,
and a few more projects out of the way, I will be doing the same with mine. In the
meantime, it is such a pleasure to live vicariously through your posts.

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
Steve - I have to "second" what Brent Burger just said,....I have enjoyed following your OCF adventure immensely, and I really wonder how you had enough patience to photographicly (sp?) document the entire trip from your home in Kansas, the OCF itself, and the trip back home to Kansas, considering all you had to put up with, like weather, a variety of minor but troublesome Model T problems, etc, etc. And as we all know, your pictures and videos are really "1st class" for sure! I sure hope to take one of my old Fords ("T" or "A") to the OCF one of these years while (Lord will'n) whatever I have left of my health holds out! Only thing is that all the way there from the Seattle area will certainly be a trip with my pickup and new enclosed trailer that I have modified with very crude (but livable) sleeping quarters! Thanks again Steve,.....harold

Re: Here I go again .... to OCF
Steve, just a shot in the dark here. I have noticed that the center bow on your top looks to be too long, the top doesn't seem to fit quite right. The pictures of the break in that bow looks like it may have been cut down and welded back together at some point with the weld having been ground down which weakened it. The break is almost too straight across to have been a failure of an original bow. Have you ever done any measurements on it? Just a thought from someone that doesn't know squat about roadster tops but does have some experience with welding. Dave

Steve, Here is the “frugal fix” for your broken top iron: Take it to your engine builder. Leave the splint on it. Have him putty up all the seams and the break with babbittrite. Pour the iron full of scrap babbitt. It will be very heavy.

Yes, I've wondered if the bad fit might be due to wrong top hardware. I expect the Classtique top would fit better on the correct sockets and bows. It never occurred to me that they might be wrong until I installed the new top and couldn't make it fit the way it should.
The broken upright is another story. I know exactly what happened there, and when. May 28, 2016, was a sunny day, but recent rains had made this Marion County road a muddy mess. I was driving too fast, trying not to get stuck, and a patch of sand that had washed across the road put the car in the ditch, where it hit some branches that broke the upright. An old body man I know made it look like new, but it was weakened enough for the battering on this trip to break it again.
The inevitable often happens.

trip, and wondered if the two issues were related ....
