Re: Coil capacitors
I have 8ea capacitors purchased from Langs last summer and never opened the package. I'd sell all 8 for $15 + shipping. PM me if interested.

Re: Coil capacitors
Dare I ask this? Do you fellows have FULL particulars on these capacitors, including micro farad ratings? I thought sadly lacking in the T world where I looked. I should've just contacted Bob!
I admit my focus is for OT reasons at this time. Wait, the DU-4 and ZR-4 magnetos are oft-times associated with the model T and this is a similar study/need for capacitors in rotating coil/condenser magnetos.

Re: Coil capacitors
Duey C, this thread from 2011 has a lot of useful information about coil capacitors:
http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/17 ... 1322781074
I had the Bosch ZE1 in my Le Zebre rebuilt a year or so back by the local magneto guru. The capacitor in that was a lot smaller than the Model T capacitors.

Re: Coil capacitors
The capacitors are 0.47uF 400V, and most importantly have a high dv/dt rating. This is where most folk get unstuck when using ordinary types which fail quickly. http://www.funprojects.com/products/5007CAP-HiD.aspx

Re: Coil capacitors
Thank you gentlemen. Gives me info to consider.
Looking for 0.22 MFD 400 volt. Darn it. Thought I had dV/dT ratings in hand.
Robust enough for the ZR-4 and possibly the same capacitor for the DU-4. Working with the U-4's.
I need to contact the info-man whether it's Millifarad or Microfarad...
I let Andy do my hot T coils...
Please excuse the thread drift Mark! Did you find/get your capacitors.

Re: Coil capacitors
No, John's correct.
2 x 0.47uF 400V caps in series will give a total capacitance of 0.235uF at 800V, certainly near enough to the 0.22uF required.

Re: Coil capacitors
Sorry, I misunderstood.
I thought he was trying to get 0.47 from two 0.22s!

Re: Coil capacitors
A couple of months ago I tried buying some capacitors to rebuild my spare coils. Lang's was out of stock then, with no idea when they'd get more. I called Snyders and I think that they said that they had "hundreds". They are the orange, rounder ones shown in the left on the photo. They are a little wider than the one on the right that Lang's had in stock. Anyway, at least you can get those kind if other places are also out of stock on the narrower kind.

Re: Coil capacitors
From an earlier post by John Regan, in reference to the two capacitors shown in NealW's post:
By John F. Regan on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 - 02:09 pm:
",,,,the capacitor that Snyder has pictured on his web site is the SBE type 418 cap and it is commonly called an "orange drop" capacitor and it is the same capacitor that Fun Projects sells as our part number 5007CAP and is the cap with the 900 dV/dT rating. The capacitor pictured above and marked 011-408474 is the capacitor Fun Projects sells as 5007CAP-HiD which is rated at 1700 dV/dT and is a bit smaller than the "orange drop" type capacitor that we have all used for years. The 011-408474 is "flatter" and thus leaves more room when nestled beside the coil winding. ,,,"

Re: Coil capacitors
Either one pictured works fine. The one on the left generally requires the glass partition to be removed in order to fit. A little more work, but that's all. Buy and use with confidence.

Re: Coil capacitors
Yep, that's what I had to do on the one "Ford" coil that I rebuilt a month or so ago. It was interesting to see the old, big condenser that got replaced with the orange capacitor. The others that I rebuilt were 1961 K-W's that had a smaller capacitor. The one on the left generally requires the glass partition to be removed in order to fit.

Re: Coil capacitors
I recently rebuilt a coil that had a normal points distributor type condenser in it. It was running and working fine in my 26 coupe. I should have posted a picture of it. The only capacitor that I have used, has been the thin rectangular ones from Lang's.

Re: Coil capacitors
I have been rebuilding Model T Ford ignition coils for over 30 Years.
I kept examples of the range of various replacement capacitors I found inside.
Many .047 U Farad caps, Metalized Mylar and electrolytics.
I seems that some felt size was the most important criteria when in reality the DV/DT rating was the critical factor.
Here is a picture of that archive.
Another funny thing is I found was rocks, gravel, body putty, newspaper, silicone spray foam and, believe it or not, cement used as re-potting material.

Just done a set of coils and found cotton waste as the 'potting' material.Ron Patterson wrote: ↑Sat Mar 14, 2020 6:14 pmAnother funny thing is I found was rocks, gravel, body putty, newspaper, silicone spray foam and, believe it or not, cement used as re-potting material.

Re: Coil capacitors
Ron,
That would make a good display at the museum. Don't forget the rocks.
