Old Postcard - Fully loaded model T

Post by Rich Eagle » Mon Apr 20, 2020 10:55 am

A friend sent me this postcard the other day. "Courtesy Hubbell Trading Post National Site" is on the back. He grew up on the "Rez" and spent some time at the Post.
I think these guys got the car well loaded.

These photos remind me of this:

On a TV series some time ago an episode plot centered on the Mustang used in the chase scene in Bullet starring Steve McQueen. At one point a male detective was explaining the importance of the car to his female partner. She said, "Boy, That's a lot to put on an old Ford."

From the overhead sign with Horses on it, likely bags of horse feed!

The other T in front of the Post Office is carrying mail bags, what better transport to get the mail delivered than a Ford. :)

Wayne,

Yup. Danny was explaining to Baez how important that Mustang was to the men of America. She was less than impressed. :D

Top photo appears to be the Hubbel Trading Post, Ganado, Arizona. The Ford likely pre-dates statehood, but it’s sure seen some hard miles !

Yes, I should have included "Mail Delivery on the Reservation" and "Confidence and pride surmount obstacles of the road and machine (including only one headlight) in the transport of mail at the Hubbell Trading Post, Navajo Reservation, Ganado, Arizona about 1920."
This all was partially obliterated by post coding on the card. Jim also mentioned "The train depot must have been 50 mi. via sandy, bladed roads".
Many of us have been off road in our Ts enough to relate to the photo. Rich B. and I have bounced and rattled severely more than we should have on such.
When did I do that?

Good to know the date of the Arizona photo ! Thanks Rich. The rez remains pretty isolated even today. I still think dirt roads are the best Model T roads !!

I have a feeling this T is getting close to ten years old or so in this picture. Can anyone find enough earmarks to give a guess as to the year this tough little car was built ? I love pix like this. Thanks for sharing it Rich !

1913 or 1914. No bill fenders. The headlight looks like a steel body. A bit of curve body front with no cowl. That's my guess.

Gosh, I can’t even SEE the body ! Good call, Rich, fenders are what I’m told are 1913 style.

Let’s see . . . “I wuz in the army for three years. . . ranched in Patagonia fer four years . . . I wuz married for two years . . . hauled mail on the rez fer seven years. - - - Gosh, that was a looong two years !”

The headlight is a carbide light with a fork mounting. I tipped the screen a bit on my laptop which lightened it up some and it showed up much clearer. Dave

I don't see it Charley. Maybe you can.
No argument about the carbide light. I think it is a steel shell Victor. Didn't '14 have the same fender lip?

Just to beat a dead flivver, here’s a snap of the repro fender on my ‘13. I think 20 years ago or so repro front fenders were offered as being for’13-‘14 ? Not long ago a correspondent pointed out the ‘13 “no bill” fenders had a sort of “buck-toothed” flare to the front edge. Can we assume the ‘14 fenders were straight like the fender in this picture ?
